Default SLP CenterMount Exhaust

Ok, im currently looking at a car to buy right now. Its a 1998 camaro ss, and has the slp center mount exhaust. Is this a rare option that came from the factory? And one of the mods i was going to do is slp loudmouth exhaust, how would it fit with the center mount exhaust. would i have to just take the rear valence off or does slp make loudmouth exhaust specifically for the center mount exhaust? thx

Im not 100%, but im pretty sure CME only came on 02 SS's and someone mustve put that exhaust on that car.

If you get it and dont want it, Ill give you $150 for the CME setup.

A rare option?? I dont think so, it comes on SLP equipped camaros. For example, mine came with the SLP 345hp package that included the CME exhaust setup. Look on your driverside door and look for the SLP logo, then on the passenger door, it should say if your car came with any SLP options. If you dont have that, then the previous owner may have added the CME setup to the car.

No SLP dont make a loudmouth exhaust for the CME setup. Im guessing this is what you will have to do in order to get your loudmouth system on the car...

Remove your stock system, then remove your tips & the bends at the end off the stock system. Get your new loudmouth system setup on the car or maybe even lay the systems side by side, then measure how much pipe your going to have to cutoff from the loudmouth system to be able to fit your tips/bends properly. Atleast thats how i would do it and im sure that's how you would somewhat have to do it with any other exhaust system out there.

Thats a lie. First off, all SS are SLPs. Mine is optioned but didnt get the CME. Sometimes when you got the pass door sticker you only got little stuff like car cover, key fob, chrome 10 spokes, or even supspension. A lot/most of SSs didnt get the 345 package and CME.

there were packages available, sorry i forget how many. you actually could build a nice car if you picked the right pieces. although you had to find a dealer willing to special order for you. which at that point in time was hard to do, at least in the area i used to live at. and as far as being rare, i havent seen many with the option except my own. on another site ive seen they brake down the option only so far. i havent seen this particular option singled out, but then again it was part of an option package. as far as changing it you only need to have an exhaust run to the tips if you like the cme look.

my 01 SS was a 100% every SLP option car which is rare as hell

for example, it came with the 345hp package which included the center mount and valence and came with the chrome 10 spokes, 275's on all 4's, SLP grill, Hurst short throw, SS floor mats etc...

The day I brought the car home from the dealership...

and now...

Also, I have done 3 different exhaust setups on my car with keeping the factory center mounts. I adapted the LM1 to the tips, then went back to the stock exhaust and now I have the Texas speed rumbler...all kept the stock center tips. It takes a little work and fabrication but its not hard to do if you have a saw zaw, cutoff wheel and a welder. Just takes alot of trial and error and measurements.

Now, as far as sound goes, the texas speed rumbler sounds MUCH better then the LM1. The stock SLP catback sounds good, but was too quiet for me. The LM1 is raspy as hell and it just loud. It sounds great WOT and at idle, but thats it where the Texas speed rumbler sounds great everywhere and I also through in a Bassaini muffler before my center tips on one side off my buddys cobra....sounds amazing. I dont have a sound clip of this current setup but heres one of the LM1 and with the stock catback...

Stock catback....Hooker long tubes, Pacesetter Y pipe, MS3 cam

LM1 catback.....

Well i didnt know all SS Camaro's were SLP. I figured they only did so many out of the ones made each year. I know not all come with the 345hp package but i was just giving him an example with my car.

Hey kidcamaro, did you get the Bilstien suspension package? Yours looks like a 4wd (stock) compared to mine and mine got the Bilstien package. Just curious. What color are your springs?

I would keep the CME its a hard/expensive set up to find. What ever you go with I would hold on to it.

BTW kidcamaro your car is clean as hell! I LOVE white SLP cars!

To add a center mount exhaust to a Camaro (parts/install/paint) you're looking at $1000+ ... so if its got it and you want it... its that much more desirable. pretty much any exhaust can be adapted to tie into the center mount .. its really nothing more than a nice set of exhaust tips.

If you plan to do a cam and an "offroad" exhaust you
may find the stock CME sounds plenty loud enough.
Mine is not "too quiet" anymore. And then there's the
cutout.

From 1996 to 2002 all SS Camaro cars were SLP Cars.

1996
Two new models were added, the Rally Sport coupe and Rally Sport convertible. They included front and rear fascia extensions, ground effects along the sides, and a three piece rear spoiler extension. This option was actually added after the vehicle was completed at Sainte-Thérèse. Cars would be shipped to a division of ‘magna – decoma’ to have the RS package installed - then the vehicle would once again return Sainte-Thérèse for final inspection before being turned over to gen-auto for shipping. The 3.8 liter 200hp engine was made standard on all base models and was available with 5-speed manual or 4 speed automatic transmissions. The SS package made a come-back and was available to dealers from arrangements with Chevrolet and SLP Engineering of Troy, Michigan. The SS featured a 305 hp engine, special hood featuring a functional scoop and forced induction, restyled rear spoiler, revised suspension, corvette-style wheels and special badging. As with the RS package – vehicles would be shipped to the SLP Engineering facility in nearby LaSalle, Quebec for conversion to Camaro SS – then returned once again to Sainte-Thérèse for final inspection. Once all was approved, Camaro SS would be turned over to gen-auto for a train-ride to the United States. (or a truck-ride to select Canadian cities).
Production for the ‘96 model year was 61,362. Of those, 2,410 were of the new SS model.
