i know that they are sold 98-00, then 01-02, but what is the difference and what would happen if a 99 maf was on my 01 car?

All 94-2002 LT1 and LS1 F-Body's had the same stock MAF, the only difference in part numbers has to do with how the screen is held in, on older sensors, it was held in with a snap ring, and on newer ones it's held in with some kind of epoxy or glue.
