Default how to check

Im pretty inexperienced at looking and telling if a trans needs a rebuild, but i purchased a trans from my ls1 swap during the summer. I ended up not buying the engine i wanted (still looking) so my trans has been sitting for 4 months now. how do i keep it form going bad? how can i check to make sure it dont need a rebuild or anything?
