Default Vacuum pump question, (search has failed me)

I was wanting to use my old air/smog pump as a vacuum pump to help with scavenging. Is there a write up are anyone with experience using this setup?

Thanks

People have tried it, I don't think the pump's last long though, as they're not designed to work for extended periods of time.

Maybe on a WOT switch, then it's only on when it really needs to be, that might be worth a shot.

Thanks for the reply. It would only be used during a 1/8 mile run, the car is a strip only car. I guess it would be worth a try to see if it picks up any MPH. I was just hoping to find someone who has already tried it before wasting time on a worthless endeavor..lol

There are people on here that tried it, from what I remember the problem was that the pump didn't last long.

I don't know what kind of power increase it would do, just take the pump, put it on a WOT switch, and hook it up to the valvecover somehow... get to a dyno and see what the gain is when it's on vs not.

If there's any substantial gain, then I'd get it on the car in a permanent fashion, if not, then just ditch it.

Those electric pumps don't like oil going into them so make sure you have an oil seperator in line.
Other than that you won't see much in the way of vacuum on a guage but it should evac the crank case of some pressure.

I'm going to give it a try and see, I guess. I have sittting in a pile of parts that was removed years ago. Took a quick look at it yeaterday and noticed it has a three wire hook up. Does anyone have any idea which wires are for what, (being lazy).

Racetronix has a clean setup for this...

http://www.racetronix.com/product/RX-CEPH/RX-CEPH.html

As said above, this should just be run at WOT or between a certain RPM if you dont have boost to reference. Pump will give out eventually.....

For an N/A application, it seems like a belt-driven pump is the way to go.

GZ motorsports has one I've been looking at ... it's a little pricey, but it seems to be what everyone is using.

GZ pump is exactly what i'm running on mine.... only issue I had with it is you need to remove or modify your A/C.

I wish there was a way to bolt that GZ setup on so the race mez. pump could be used....

You have a GZ setup with a race water pump? Coudl you take a picture of the belt routing, because the pump I have doesn't use the stock tensioner at all and has no provision for the belt to ride on the pump...

No, no, no not the race water pump but the Meziere 'stock replacement' EWP with the stock tensioner. I've been running it for about 5,000 miles and everything has been working great.

Was just checking out their site and they list...

LSX Vacuum Pump Kits without Belt Tensioner

Comes with V-belts and pulleys for use with cars that have an electric water pump. This model is only used when the serpentine belt tensioner is not utilized. The added crank pulley is an option only when there is clearance to run it and install it.

I run a STAR pump but it bolts on the same way. Manual tensioner with a cog pulley attached to the outside to run the vac. pump.

That's what I really need, one that will bolt to the tensioner on the front.

I'm adding the vacuum pump to the things that have to go on the motor after ti gets freshened/upgraded, I'll have to look into this some more.

I'm running a motor plate, so that makes it a little different with the available mounting options, I think the plate is going to get replaced when it's out of the car (tabs on the frame rails weren't done how I really wanted them, plus the plate I have is pretty small and doesn't really give me the options of mounting the pump like I want to)

The water pump I have, is the race one that doesn't use the stock tensioner. But, once I redo the plate, I could just get a moroso or whatever that's designed to be bolted to a motor plate, just have to put the mandrel on the balancer and get it lined up. Should be simple, something that bolts right to the head would be easier, but it's no big deal.

If this is mostly a racecar, put a motorplate on it.

Bolt a moroso 3 vane pump to the plate and use the ATI mandrel for a BBC (need to use their superdamper). You can get the necessary hardware from moroso (pullies, etc).

Car's already got a motorplate, but it was cut to be as light as possible so there's nto alot of room on it to mount something... I'll redo it and then probably go the moroso route, simply because they're right here in CT and I can take a ride down there on a saturday and pick up most anything I need.
