Default Bad pulley squeal! How to figure out which one it is?

I have a really bad pulley squeal, pretty damn loud. Is there a good way to diagnose which one it is?

Take the belt off and spin each pulley with your hand. You will most likely feel a bad bearing or pulley that way. It could also be your balancer spinning on the hub. Normally a bad belt or tensioner is the cause of the squeak.

When you say 'feel a bad bearing' would I feel tension/stress, or would the pulley almost be loose?

^ Mines not exactly crickets. It's like 15000 crickets that go up and down with RPM.

Look at the idler pullies especially for the A/C. If they don't spin smoothly or the plastic has a groove worn in it, which is very common, they will whail like a banshee.

I have no AC so that eliminates two pulleys haha.

You should be able to tell if it's the idler or tensioner pulley if it doesn't really spin freely. Also they should have zero translational movement in any direction.

I went and played with the pulleys for a bit. The tensioner doesn't spin freely, there's not exactly resistance, but as soon as i take my hand of from spinning it, it stops. It also has a little play meaning i can rock the pulley maybe 1/32'' of an inch backwards and forwards.

Sound like the culprit? I was pretty sure it was my alternator pulley since I built my own bracket, however it seems to spin fine and has no movement. The engine only has 27k on it... strange that the tensioner would be bad already.

Alright, wasn't the tensioner.

I took the belt off and wet the entire thing with water. This stopped the squeaking. What exactly does this mean. I figure I could replace the belt and it would be ok, but this belt is only 6 months old maybe 5k miles. Could there be a cause to why the belt started to squeak?
