Default Noise coming from my T56...help...

Let me start by saying the noise didn't start until after we installed a new input shaft. It was installed according to spec and has 0 end play.

The problem is between 1500-1850 RPM's. The car gets a rattling noise. Gets louder if you accelerate thru it. After 1850, it goes away. Does it in all gears, but 4th is the most prominent.

Any ideas?

Did you replace the pilot bushing when you replaced the input shaft?

as far as I know. I actually had my buddy did it for me. Too late to call him now. But, wouldn't it do it all the time if it were the pilot shaft bearing?

Sorry for the stupid ?, my first stick car in a while.

Thanks

Not neccesarily...just like a UJoint...it can make a noise or vibration at different speeds, pilot bearing is no different...

Why did you install a new input? Was the clutch swapped? I ask because it soulds like gear rattle that is common on launch or low RPM when the engine lugs. It could happen if you tend to lug the engeine( too low RPM for gear selected) . An aftermarket clutch can introduce that due to a different spring package. It could also be a heat shield noise/ exhaust vibe - easy to check.

Does not sound like its from the transmission. When you reinstalled the unit, did it go flush up to the bellhousing or did you have to draw it in with the bolts?

As Calhoon said, it could simply be a vibration from the heat shield or exhaust. It could also be a broken spring in the clutch disc as well.

^^+1

also if it were the pilot bearing it would only make noise when the clutch is disengaged. if the clutch is engaged the pilot bearing isn't being spun.

Yes guys, the clutch was replaced with a McLeod RXT twin setup. And it is doing it when the car is "lugged" around as described by one of you.

That noise is common with a rigid type clutch and an engine with a choppier idle. My 94Gt does the same thing. Its got a 393W and a T56 in it as well.

its turning but if the clutch is engaged the input shaft for trans is rotating as well. so the bearing is turning as a whole but its stationary in relation to the crank and input-shaft.
