Default Front caliper hanging up!

Ugh. I think my front driver side caliper is hanging up on me. Are these things as expensive to replace as they look - and is it smart to pick up just one? Should I get a pair? I've been noticing quite a bit more brake dust on that particular wheel since I got the V back in April, but just today I started to hear the wear sensor. I took a peek, and it looks like I had better hurry up while I can still get the rotor turned. I've hard Hawk make a good pad - any other suggestions on this?

Last time I had a caliper hang on my fbody, I was able just to buy the bracket with the sliders through a junk yard in alabama that specializes in fbodys...the only other choice is the whole caliper through the dealer. It was only 3 years old at the time so maybe there are some junk yards with V's in them now. Maybe try to find someone parting a V instead of buying the whole caliper.

^^^thanks - i found one place parting out a V but it was for the entire brake set - rotors and all on ebay. i've seen 'em from time to time but not usually single ones.

do you guys/gals know if calipers are one of those things that should be replaced in pairs?

Not necessary in pairs but you can usually find good deals on ebay. I sold a pair of brand new front V calipers on ebay a few months ago for $180. Thats all they went for.

Not sure what causes that with a Brembo, but since you don't have a bracket and guide pins like an Fbody does, its not the same problem.

GM does sell rebuild parts for CTSV brembos, I just rebuilt an entire caliper for a customer after coating it that had bad seals and boots. One part number was for the 4 pistons and seals, and the other part number was for 4 dust boots. If you aren't comfortable rebuilding it, I can do it for you if you want to send it. I can get the rebuilds on major discount as well.

That is assuming its the boots and/or seals causing the problem.

Looks like you're located in Chicago as well. I'm up by the Green Bay area. I see you do powder coating as well? I'm thinking of changing up the colors of my calipers while I'm at it.

Hit me up, I'd be glad to help. I have to take all the internals out when I coat them anyway. If you need a rebuild, I could take care of it all in one shot.

X2. They are fixed calipers and I'm sure SilverGhost's rebuild kit will cure the prob and this will be a cheaper solution than a new caliper although they aren't too expensive. A new sets of pads is def in order though lol.

SG,

Are rebuilds necessary after PC'ing the calipers? I'd love to get mine PC'd but don't want to have to mess with rebuilding them afterwards....unless they're cheap to rebuild.

But I second on the rebuild less money and not too difficult. I rebuilt the caliper on my old Porsche. Getting the pistons out might be a challange. 4 vs 2 on my old Porsche.

Disassembly Procedure
Caution: Do not place your fingers in front of the piston in order to catch or protect the piston while applying compressed air. This could result in serious injury.

Not needed, as long as the current parts are not damaged already, no problem just re-using them. Its easy to get everything apart without hurting the internals, and just clean and lube and put it all back in. Regardless, you don't have to do anything, I'd send them back ready to be bolted back on the car. Be happy to help, just PM me.

Not a challenge at all. Just keep the two halves bolted together when you blow the pistons out, trim a piece of 2x6 to slide in there for the pistons to bang into and viola. Just do one side at a time this way and its safe and easy. Just keep the fluid hole open on the side you don't want the pistons to blow out on so whatever air makes it over there from the crossover pipes escapes, and plug the bleeder on the side you ARE blowing them out of and put compressed air into the feed hole on that side. Then switch sides and blow the other two out. Removing the boots without hurting them is the only real trick on Brembo's, but I've got my quick and simple method for that also.

el cheepo as in ..."Built to last! Duramax!". Can you say spongy? No where near the bite of the Brembo pads but it'll have to do for now. $55 with a lifetime warranty. The guy said I can come replace 'em every 6 month if I wanted to...
