Sounds like engine missfire, If the PCM detects missfire real or not (sometimes you can get false missfire detection with a high stall) it will randomly lock and unlock the converter or stop locking at all. This is corrected in tuning by raising the missfire threshold.

Was it cold out? I've noticed that my TC will unlock on the highway if I'm going down a long hill with no load on the tranny if it's cold out. I forget what the temperature threshold is for the TC to achieve lock up but if the tranny fluid temperature goes below that temperature threshold then it unlocks until the fluid warms back up.
