Oil pump install...am I missing something?

Oil pump install...am I missing something? Im replacing my ls1 pump with a ported ls6. When I went to put it on and start bolting it in, it seemed like it went on a little cockeyed. I took off the new pump and put on the old and it did the same thing...am I missing something here?

The center gear is loose. The main thing should be that it draws in to the motor smoothly. I like to tighten the oil pump bolts in a criss cross pattern also bc, well, it makes me feel good inside

Yeah it's not perfectly square. Get it seated all the way on the lower chain sprocket and get all 4 bolts started before tightening them down. Once is it secured to the front of the motor then worry about the pick up tube. Be sure you get the pick up tube centered in the pump to ensure the o-ring seals properly.

Sorry, I think I typed something wrong. Im having no issues bolting the pump in, just the pickup tube is going in cockeyed. I try to bolt the pickup tube in without the pump being bolted to the block, that way theres plenty of movement. Cant seem to get it right.

The pickup tube is "going in" cockeyed meaning into the pump body? You gotta be real mindfull of how the pickup seats into the pump in regards to the O-ring.

My best solution for this problem was to first, engage the pump gear onto the crank gears through the center, then rotate the pump clockwise to clear the pick-up tube. Then push the pump almost all the way back, then as you are rolling it back counter-clockwise line the pick-up tube as the pump is coming around. Thats the best way I have figured out.

Well, I need to drop the oil pan anyway as I dropped the bolt in there for the pickup tube last week so not having the oil pan on there should make things alot easier lol

Remove the pump cover and gears. Slide the pump body nearly into position pausing to put the pickup tube("O" ring installed) into the pump input port and then push the pump body fully home. Put the gears and cover back on. Start the 4 pump bolts finger tight. Install the pickup tube flange bolt and turn the pump mounting bolts home.
