Time for new slicks: 26" Hoosiers vs. 27.3" ET Drags
I need some new slicks for this year. I'm debating between the 26" Hoosiers and 27.3" (28") ET Drags. Both are 9" wide. My car is in the sig. It is possible that I will be getting a new rear with 3.90 gears. Does anyone think I will need to roll the fenders with the 27" tires and Convo Pros? I'm looking for which will get me the best ET/mph. Will the 27" help out any on the top end compared to the 26"?
I was thinking since I could hold the gear out longer the 27" MIGHT help me out in the 1/8 if I can hold 2nd all the way through, but wouldn't run as well in the 1/4. Is that a logical conclusion? Any thoughts on which would be better overall (hooking, stability, top-end)? Thanks!

I like the biggest tire I can get on my Hot Rod. I would go with the 28 slicks. You will have to do some rubbing on the inner fender wells to make them fit.
Now, most people will not agree wth me about slicks but bigger is better in my book. I run 30x9x15 or 29x10.5x15 slicks. We have rerolled the fenders and rubbed a whole lot on the inner fender wells.
hooking, stability, top-end are your goal, go with the 28's
Good luck.

I run the 28x10.5x15 when I run nitrous. On 15x10 Convo Pro, but they only have 5" backspacing. They will stick out. If you are going with Convo Pro and getting a new rear-end (hopefully a 12-bolt), have them narrow it about 1.5". I did, my 28's fit perfect. No rolling the fenders or banging. See pictures on my shitty web page.

i LOOOOVE my 28x9 et drags. they hook so hard for this heavy under powered auto car. pulls consistent 1.51-1.53 on stock heads N/A at a sick 19 psi cold (21 psi hot!). they should be plenty for a decent shot of nitrous too. i go through the traps at around 6100 rpms in 3rd gear.

I had to do some trimming/cut off bumpstop etc for the 28X10.5, everyone I know that used this tire has had to at the very least remove the bumpstop.
When you say top end do you mean MPH? If so, the taller tire will hurt your MPH. But if you are looking to cross the traps at a lower rpm and/or stay in a certain gear then the taller tire will help that by lessening your effective gear ratio.
so to answer your three questions in parantheses
Hooking: The bigger tire will hook harder
Stability: The smaller tire will be more stable due to less sidewall
Topend: I answered that one already making a guess on what you were referring to exactly.

i disagree with the larger sidewall = less stability. more sidewall will allow you to run higher pressure and still hook. thus more stable. most mn6 guys on 26" tires have to run low low pressure to hook. if you can get away with 5-6 extra psi and hook, you will have a smoother ride down the big end.
