Default Cam for Stock Exhaust Manifold?

I am putting a iron LS1 (5.3 bored for stock LS1 piston) in a 92 Camaro. I am using the stock exhaust manifolds on the car cause I'm not paying $750 for swap headers. Thinking about getting the Comp 273 (224/230 581./588). Would this be a good cam? The motor will have home ported 799's with .040 gaskets. Also will use either a LS6 intake or ported LS2. The car is an auto with 3.23 gears and is going to be used for autocross/daily driver. Help me pick a cam please. Thanks

I think that everyone is going to tell you to just drop the dollars on some headers since there is so much power freed up there. I wish I could run a set of long tubes on my Jeep swap but there just isn't clearance.

you must upgrade the ls1 SPRINGS if you run a bigger cam, stock 92 exhaust will choke the crap out of that engine, unless you have to pass emissions check, get headers, Y pipe and catback. just my 2 cents man, cheers!

Check with Geoff @ EPS (sponsor) He has some nice cam profiles
that will work good with stock type exhaust and single beehive springs.

I have 918 springs already.

The car has a 3" cat back system on it now. Now sure if I'll be keeping it or not.

There is NO money for headers for this project. I would also like to see a link to $400 headers that will fit a 92 Camaro with a LS1.

The reason I am asking about this cam is cause there is a used one for sale that would fit this budget. So anyway, how would this cam work with manifolds?

If that's the case I'd get a used LS6 cam. That one you mentioned would be seriously choked up by manifolds and would really benefit a tune which is more money unless of course you already own your own software to do it yourself.

I'd like to get that Patrick G cam or maybe the Cheater cam but I'd much rather find something used and save the coin for other stuff. I guess I really thought that 224/230 cam would work ok with manifolds and a decent exhaust.

Vette Z06 cast iron manifolds, if they fit the chassis, are not much of a restriction to a fairly mild 5.7L LS engine, especialy one that is used for Auot-X where you are in the midrange of the rpm band a great deal of the time.

One of the Rod Rags ran some dyno tests on a similar combination and they were really surprised how well the Vette manifolds worked. They were something llike 20 hp better than the Camaro manifolds. There are enough Vette folks who have swapped to headers that you should be able to score a set on the Vette boards for very little. Plumb them back to your catback with 2-1/2 mandrel bent tubes and call it a day.

The LS Camaros I am familiar with in SCCA Solo II generally run the whole course in 2nd gear (after launch). That applies to parking lot courses, gokart tracks and airport tracks. A nice broad torque curve is very helpful. Top end power, not so much so. Seeing an F-Stock Camaro win overall on a gokart track is fun!

If you decide to do a auto-X cam, make sure the cam designer has experience doing big broad torque curves with stock manifolds. The down side to that cam is it won't sound to lumpy at idle. Shucks!

I wish vette manifolds worked, they dont. I do have the newer better flowing F body manifolds thou. And I dont really care how the car sounds. If it sounded stock that would be even better. SLEEPER!!

I think you'll be fine. Sounding stock is nice and it usually makes a driveable vehicle....that's still QUICK.
