cam question, how big is too big.....
So, how big is too big on a stock stalled LS4? The factory converter seems extremely loose making me "think" that you could run a fairly big cam pretty easily.
The reason I ask is because my brother is pondering selling his '00 WS6 with an MTI X1 cam, 230/227 .591/.571 lsa 112, with comp 918 springs and hardened pushrods, so I was gonna take that cam package from him before he sold it. Would those specs be overkill in an LS4? I ran a 224/224 cam in my '02 WS6 on the stock stall for a while and it was fine, but I realize this is a different scenario. Any thoughts?
Joe.

Didn't I comment on this already? Ghost posts. Anyways I said you will need new lifters, ls2 lifter retainers, new head gaskets and bolts, and you have to ditch dod with that much lift. Dual springs would be a better choice than the 918s.

The DOD will definitely be ditched, and i will invest in the proper lifters and such, but my main concern would be the driveability on the stock converter.....think it will create any problems? Will it feel like an absolute turd out of the hole?

remember that ur also dealing with a smaller engine, 5.3 vs 5.7... that X1 was pretty big in a 5.7, so it will be very soft on the low end, and make power past 6000, where u hardly drive, and it will not make the trans very happy having to spin that high...

If I can get it for free I might try it just for fun, otherwise I might try a something along the lines of a 224 cam. Not that any of this is happening any time soon, but I still wanted to hear some thoughts.
Sittingmongoose, I cant believe you didnt see any gains with the LS6 cam, that sucks man. What is your car trapping in the 1/8, 1/4?
Thanks for the input fellas.
Joe.

the LS6 cam is FINE for this car, but don't waste your time on ANY cam without swapping that intake and getting some headers.
As soon as that cam starts to make power, the stocking manifolds stop making power, negating any gains from the cam.

After all the cam swaps I have read about I am opting just to keep the LS4 cam. I do however run 1.85 rockers though. It's a great combo for low, mid, and upper gains. I bet headers on this combo would be even better.

and can someone help me out in understanding how much of a diffrence there is in between .550 and .650 can you really tell the diffrence with higher ratio roller rockers and ls6 springs ?and how would you know when you need to upgrade.right now i got smaller upgrades but looking to start with the internal work.. aside from headers and intake ..

I ran the stock valve springs but used oil restricted pushrods. I got a deal for SLP rockers for 200.00. They usually go for 500.00 or more. I have had them on the car for about 5k miles with no problems. I also have the DOD shut off.

You still have the stock lifters in though don't you? Or did you get rid of them when you changed pushrods?
