Seeing as we already have GREAT heads, Seems like an aftermarket cam would have helped along with an aftermarket or even a factory intake. Still, 18whp is disappointing.

-It is running
-The cam is NO WHERE NEAR aggresive enough.
-The heads were TOO BIG so i talked to patriot and they are going to swap to a more restrictive head and i am doing a head swap this weekend.
-I spent 6000, so you guys cna tell me if its worth it.
-My gas milege went from 36mpg on the highway to 22mpg
This car DOESNT LIKE MODS

I'm going to argue that you're just doing the WRONG mods. On this engine, I wouldn't touch the heads. Better intake, headers, full exhaust, and some sort of forced induction would have been a better way to spend your 6 grand.

Looks like a turbo is the way to go with these cars.

Maybe headers & a true dual exhaust could free up all those hidden ponies.

Gotta love the money pit side of car crafting.

What hidden ponies? 1 hp/cu in is about right for a street compression pushrod engine. Sure we can get a few more but I'm pretty sure to get over the 350 mark we'll need FI.

YOU NEED HEADERS AND A BETTER INTAKE MANIFOLD!!!!!!!

Maybe now someone will take my word on this one.

Oh, I don't care if you have ported stockers. i.e. perfume on a pig.

I think headers would have made a huge difference; especially on those stage 2 heads. That would be my next mod if I was in your shoes SM.

Well i am thinking either two things. Either the heads are HURTING power OR there just isnt a lot of gains to be seen with better heads and all this other stuff till i get headers and a better intake. Anyone think these heads are acually hurting me?

I have three options:
1. Keep what i have and just accept the fact that i wont make power till the intake and headers are on.
2. Get less aggresive heads from patriot and see if that fixs it.
3. Get patriot to rebuild my stock heads so i can use them again and just use the stock ones.

Personally, I would use stock heads or worked stock ones and put that money into headers/intake. Not sure if this is what you're asking but we really do have good heads already.

It could be flowing too well. I suppose that's possible. But I don't want to tell you something that I have no experience with. This is my first LS engine.

It sounds like a classic case of mismatched parts. Do you have a before and after dyno graph?

Those stock heads are really good. They would be the last thing I would change. Sorry about your luck. Are you sure everything is mechanically up to par?

hence why I asked if you had a before/ after DYNO GRAPH. So I can compare the power curves and peaks.

Honestly, they aren't bad heads but since your intake/ exhaust is so restrictive that larger intake valve and runner isn't doing much for your cause.

CarCraft did a 5.3 build up with an SSR 5.3 back in 04. They made 413hp with a full exhaust, truck intake and LPE GT1-1 cam. They added a set of LPE CNC'd heads and gained 24hp/15tq at the peaks with no loss is power down as low as 2000rpm. Then added a fast to make a total of 458hp/392tq. I'm going to scan the article when I get a chance and maybe we can make it a sticky for you guys. BTW, they only gained 10hp with a set of headers, however, I guarantee those truck mani's flow waaaaaaay better than the LS4 setup.

Get an LS2 intake or better and a set of long tubes on that thing.

Holy crap I’m sorry to hear that. I’m not a 100% if its fact, but I’ve never heard of anyone loosing power from too big of head. Too much cam yes. I would look at putting a 224 cam in it. The cam you but in ain’t much different than the stock one. What’s another couple hundred dollars? I don’t know if that would do much good till you get headers. That intake ain’t helping either I wonder how much vacuum your pulling at WOT? Once again I’m sorry to hear that, busted knuckles and checkbooks for no gain to speak of sucks.

sorry never really got back to ya on the stuff for the car just so damn swamped with school and work it's nuts plus tranny on mine died so had to yank it waiting on my TEP one now WOOT

stock with just muffles and K&N CAI i put down 230

after the motor blew and put in the mods she put down 278@6K with a tuner who didn't know how to tune my car quite right. So gained a min of 48 horses, I haven't had a chance to hit up the dyno for a few pulls since I re-tuned the car myself, I upped spark advance a bit more been trying to figure out how to keep the map sensor from flipping out on me, think the cams a bit aggressive and causing inconsistencies making map sensor go nuts.
cam TR 224/224 .563/.563 112 lsa
heads are stock just removed all the rough casting left behind so really just polished heads
HS 1.7 rockers
comp cam 918's, 7.4000 rods, lifters, retainers.

that was also before the exhaust cutout was added on, the guy couldn't figure out how to get the car to go above 6KRPM so figure my peak HP is somewhere above the 6K mark considering we peaked there every time.
