Default BS3 won't read cranking RPM

I need some help guys. I have everything hooked up and the car cranks, but when I pull up the cranking dashboard it won't read cranking RPM. The car is at a shop right now, but I plan on checking the resistance of the MSD crank trigger next. I have verified that it's hooked up correctly. Only thing I can think of is a bad sensor or I'm losing 12V when cranking. The voltage on the cranking dashboard still reads about 9V when cranking though. Any ideas?

Some threads/posts on Yellow Bullet about this problem.
9VDC seems low to me. Someone there said his absolute bottom vdc is 10. I'd agree.
