Sleek beak hood modification ... just for fun First off, I know there's a couple people out there who'll try and say crap about my project and I respect their manliness and anti-riceness, but it's something I'm doing to get some experience in body work/mods and also to while away some free time; since the car is all done and is sitting in for the winter.
Since putting the WS6 hood on, the stock hood's been lying around and it's almost impossible to get rid of these hoods except as scrap metal so I decided to put an idea I've always wanted to try out into action...
Heat extractors!
First it was to lay out the pattern. A few measurements and some painters tape later...
this puts the start of the scoop just behind the air filter cover and to both sides of the intake tract.
Some cutting later (and cutting out the bracing underneath), I'm satisfied with where I'm going here...
I'll be welding in the sides with some sheet metal and putting a screen across the front end of it.
A few ideas I played with also; but I'm gonna go with the more simple setup above 'cos I think it's more appealing to most.
Ram air style scoops...
Or a really deep heat extractor scoop (like in the Corvette race cars)
More to come as I get time and materials in...

haha im in the same boat as you with the hoods laying around. i've had my plain stock camaro hood laying around for half a year now since i got my cowl hood, and i've had the sleek beak laying around for a few months since i got the ws6 hood. Looks like a fun project your got going there. i was actually thinking about building my own cowl on the camaros hood, but i think i'm just going to use the hoods as some practice work to try out painting- since i'm planning to paint my moms 78 Z28 around jan/feb.

i really like the shallow extractor style. id like to see it on a car. i would beware of hitting stuff underneath, so i wouldnt make it too deep. im not sure how much clearance there is under there. lol

thanks guys, hope to get some work done tonight so may have some pics tomorrow "maybe". Got some steel in today and will drop by the store to pick up a couple more cutting disks. Only issue is the steel I got is a bit stiffer/thicker than I'd like it to be-can't complain, it was free-we'll see how things go.

Update... got a bit done tonight before dinner. Put the hood on the car and checked all the clearences and damn I'm good at measuring, it just clears the air filter cover and intake tract!
Cut some sheet metal and tacked it in place ... I HATE FLUX CORE!!! I can never do good work with it, gotta get me a bottle of gas soon before I do the final round of welds to the hood. Just sprayed a bit of white paint to see how it'll look in the end...
