they don't make much power.
some tests have shown bypassing the TB gains like 2 hp
and the FRA has to be better than bone stock!!
and if you have the tools..porting a tb is free.

take a dremel to the inside of the stock lid...removing the fins and increasing air flow
another free mod...may or may not help depending on your particular TB...but the "bump stop" sometimes needs to be modified to allow the throttle to open the blade a true 90deg.
there are other free mods that don't neccessarily increase power.
you can remove the rear spring isolator and replace it with heater hose for a more level ride height.
you can cut the EGR tube out of the intake manifold (if so equipped), or remove the EGR totally and deal with the code.
if you have a welder you can box the panhard bar, lcas and even the torque arm
not so free, but should be part of the maintenance anyway...replace ALL lubricants (engine, trans, rear) with new, possibly synthetic. will keep every thing working most efficiently, and some have shown to add a few hp compared to old fluid.

Free mods = Something to do.
Maybe, just maybe you will gain 5 HP. . . But, it really don't matter. It's free and something to do.
I did pretty much everything I can to my car that was free. Relocated the cruise control module, rerouted the harness on the passenger's side, rerouted the AIR hoses, P&P my own throttle body, cut down the stem from the EGR in the intake, bypassed the coolant line through the throttle body.
Why not, some make things easier to work on and some make the engine compartment look better.

It looks better now, I painted all the front plastic crap that looked whitish.
It's easy, just time consuming.
I moved all the air hoses way low in the engine bay, they are way long enough.
Moved the cruise module way behind the AC unit, also no modification is necessary except extending the wire I think. It was real easy.
And I also moved the complete wire harness under the wheel well. I fucked up and cut the hole to far back and it didn't work. I had to get the hole welded and painted. That sucked because I got careless. But it is also easy, you don't have to cut any wires at all.
Look around on the board, I found most of the stuff on here.
