Default 28 10.5 Clearance

How much clearance to inner wheel well with a 28 10.5 15, with tire in the stock location?

Trying to figure out my new backspace that I'll need, and want to know if it will be possible to tuck the tire in a tad.

Are you using a stock length rear end? If you are, you can use a 15x10 with 7.5" backspacing. Just cut the bump stops off and do some hammering on the forward portion of the wheel well.

Below is my car with a 3rd gen rear end (about 4 inches narrower overall than a 4th gen) with 15x10 6.0" backspacing wheels. The math works out the about the same as running a stock width rear with the 7.5" back spacing wheels.

You can prolly get by with a 5.5" back spacing, it will be close though. Just get out the 15lb sledge and a cut off wheel. I don't have mini tubs either.

Lots of people fit 28x10.5s without even hammering the wheel wells. If you have adjustable suspension parts to get everything perfectly centered, and run a 7.5'' or equivalent backspace you should be alright. Just chop off the bumpstops and if you have to hammer a bit it's not the end of the world.

well that's good to hear that I won't have to hammer. But how much clearance do you think there will be, from experience, so that I can know how much I can tuck.

I have some 7.5 wheels but they ain't going to fly with 3" narrowed.

My calc is like this. Currently run a 7.5, will have new rearend shortened 3", will run a strange rear brake which puts me in another .75".

That gives me a total of (7.5-3-.75) = 3.75"BS. This would put tire in stock location. In order to tuck 1", I would need a 4.75" BS.

I just don't know if the wheel / tire will fit in the well with a 4.75" (may rub inner well). If I knew the clearance on a stock located 28 x 10.5 x15, I could determine if a 4.75 will work. If not, I will go 3.75.

thanks.

If you use stock backspacing you can probably get away without pounding the wells if your suspension is dialed in perfect, but if you want it to tuck an extra inch you'll probably have to break out the sledge.

Your math looks good to me, if you want it that extra inch pulled in, go for it, just understand that you might have to do a decent amount of pounding.

You'll be clearancing and BFH'ing if you look to cut 28's in an inch. Do you understand where it will make contact?

yes, I think so. I'm wondering if a sledge will be enough, or if cut and patch would need to happen.

Looks as though front inner fender has been beat in. Also looks like lower front corner of inner fender has been notched out?? I think I see the frame rail hiding in the corner??

You will not be able to tuck it in 1" from the stock location.... Not enough room. You need tubs for that.

As is, if in the stock location, you still need to bfh the hell out of it most of the time.

I am narrowed 4" per side, but have the wheel at the stock location, on a 28-13.-15 dot slick which is roughly the same as a 28x10.5 slick, and I bfh'd the hell out of it, an occaisionally on tight turns, it still scrapes the wheel well, as I have a spool and the tires go different speeds and skip....

If you want to tuck, mini tub it on those size tires...

I didn't do the clearancing in the pic above, previous owner did. But I did put in that sweet red rearend and red parts.

If you use that wheel well pic as a guide, 10-11 o'clock is where you need to BFH for tire clearance. I've hammered in that section on the old Formula when I ran 28W's. So you might be able to tuck 1/2-3/4 of an inch until you need to minitub I'm thinking.

Thanks guys. I might go for 1/2". I'd hate to buy wheels w/ 1" and it don't work. Them wheels ain't cheap.

tee-boy, is this for a Camaro or? Camaro is easier to fit a tire on more so than the Pontiacs. I think there is a little more room.

A friend of mine 'tuff' is selling some rear bogarts with the welded-spacers removed in the classifieds. i think he wants 350 for them. you could try those and see if they work, they would maybe be 1/2" narrower than a regular bogart and you could use or resell them...

Thanks John. Checked them out. 7.5 w/o a spacer would put me in the 8.5 range, if i'm thinking about that right. Don't think that would fit the shortened rear though.
