Default Is 4" exhaust too big??

I have some pacesetter LT's that i am about to install. I also bought a 3" ORY from a friend that goes straight into the headers but basically from the end of the Y-pipe down to the muffler is 4" piping the muffler is a Edlebrock Victor Series Tru-Flo with 4" inlets(looks just like a mufflex)...Will this set up effect the performance of the car i have heard it will loose low end but gain high end and people have told me that this set up is for use on boosted LSx cars. Also my car is pretty much stock besides an SLP Lid. I have a Z06 hot cam that is gonna go in later as well. Advice would be appreciated guys. Thanks

Four inch is too big. Stick with three inch if you're using the Y pipe.

I've honestly thought about this before and wondered if it was a good idea. It seems like you'd get almost the same flow as true duals (3" out of headers into an X or H into 3" piping) with having 3" out of the headers into a Y that went to a 4" after the merge. The 4" I pipe would still have more constriction than the duals, but it would increase flow. Maybe you lose exhaust velocity or something?

I know that another member on here is running a 4" Y https://ls1tech.com/forums/generatio...-ory-pics.html

big exhaust won't make the car "run like crap"

and honestly i bet you won't even lose power down low.

everyone likes to talk about that, but i've never seen it happen or be proven. usually it "feels" that way only bacause the power curve is shifted or the major power increase is in the upper rpm range, making the low end feel sluggish.

everyone still says that a ported FAST 90/90 on cam only will lose power down low...but somehow i gained 5-10hp and ftlbs from 3000rpm and up. imagine that

guys have put dual cutouts on bolt on cars and gained power.

why would a 4" exhaust lose power or cause crappy runing....come on

if u planning on doing a little more than bolt ons like a cam or heads id say go for it. i have two friends with the 4'' mufflex systems and it sounds great and performs great. they are both longtube cam only ls1's and theres no power loss whatsoever. a single 4'' would be best on a forced induction car no doubt but i like running longtubes with a ory and a cutout but again thats my opinion. but yes u should be just fine with 4'' setup.

You will be fine. Its not as big of a deal as everyone has made it out to be. I would agree that you might have some clearance issues, but if you are at stock ride height I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

Good choice on keeping it. First off 4" is not only for FI setups. 4" is for bigger horsepower but wont kill you or make your car run bad. It leaves more room for more upgrades. Enjoy your loud car.

Well sorry about the delay but today i finally completed the exhaust! You can feel the power although its below 30 degrees and my tires are almost gone...As far as loudness goes surprisingly the muffler is really quiet sounds a little louder than stock at idle but sounds amazing at WOT! a unique sound. I felt impressive power gains along with my hypertech pp3. Once it recieves a professional dyno tune and i get better tires im sure the car will run alot better. So if anyone is thinking about doin this set up as far as i know and feel there is no power loss what so ever. Car is a perfect sleeper right now...and the car has no cats and all egr/air components have been removed. only thing wrong is car has vacum leak but well fix that tomorrow

4" is too big on an NA car where exhaust scavenging makes a difference. Your butt dyno may say you are making more power, but in reality, you probably are making the opposite. Sound is a term used in conjunction with personal preference and experience. What may sound stock to you may be ear deafening to others.
