Default 1987 Monte Carlo Aerocoupe LY6 4L80 build and conversion mock up thread by Retro LSX

Hey I’m starting a thread with this swap and will keep a very detailed build of this car for anyone doing these conversions in a G-body.
The car

1987 80K original mile Black Aerocoupe with C5 Corvette brakes, modern leather int. Cowl hood and a very good body and paint. The Monte has also had some serious suspension upgrades with tubular upper and lower controls and a full assortment of bolt on suspension parts. This is a very clean and fully built 80s muscle car that’s being built to stand out of the crowd.

We dumped its 406/200r4 for a 2008 6.0L LY6/4L80

The car currently has its engine removed and has been prepped for the install.

At first we are going to mock up with our dead 98 block and 4L65 to develop a new line of more affordable complete conversion kits. Kits will include( Motor mounts, frame mounts, crossmember, trans mount)

We will also offer stainless steel ML and LT headers with ball flanges built for each application at much more reasonable prices.

The motor and transmission (Ly6 4L80) with 10K miles is being pulled apart to be cleaned and are being prepped for the VVT cam swap, oil pan change and installation.

Current Performance is reworking the OEM harness for us

Looking forward to the stainless LT header option..

What is the position your kit will place the motor? I already have the engine in with John Bs mounts that place the engine 5/8" forward from stock..

I sent you a PM on this but figured this question and answer would benefit others that are interested as others have G-bodys that place the motor in a similar location without John Bs mounts such as transdapt and BRP.

Thanks,

Matt

I'm using Spohn motor mounts which place the motor in the stock location. Will your headers fit this application and when can we expect them?

The Ly6/ 4L80 has been complete taken apart and is getting the Comp cam installed this week. (photos to come)

The motor is moved forward to clear the A/C box more than likely this will be the same way just not as high due to the benefits of the LHX oil pan we offer.

The Monte will get its mock up this week and I’ll get some photos up of the kit.

Right now we have only have the motor in for some fitment testing with the various trans and acc. The kits final location has not been decided just yet. The headers should fit the variations swaps from what I have seen with the old Husler LS headers in the different application.
Kits will be ready late January and I hope to have the headers to follow shortly after in Feb.

Here are some more pictures of the swap. The mock up motor is rested in the MCSS.

I’ll get some more photos of the shop up soon.
Its getting stainless steel headers that are going to be built off this car. The other headers will fit with trimming of the trans ears as stated. I know all the husler style headers and know where they can be improved upon. The cathedral and rectangle ports are more important on the intake side. With the L92/LS3 heads the exhaust port would benefit from the 1 7/8 heads but the 1 ¾ would work just not make peak power.

More photos and info to come very soon. Ill have all the details on the VVT cam swap once I get the all photos edited.

Can you get that VVT to work with a manual trans car?

We are looking into using the TH400 in some of the swaps and for kit mock up. Once we have some prototype parts we will post them up.

Nice swap! Best thing I ever did to my car was the LS6 swap. It has been in my car for 5 1/2 years with no problems. Good luck with everything!
