Default SBC Crank seal install

Can this be done without removing the cover? I know I can do it on my LT1, but my Dad insists he might bend the cover or mess up the seal if he tries to do it. Or do they make a special tool to press it on? It's a SBC 350 in a 71 Nova. Thanks.

Stock 71 or era correct block? Chances are very good it is a 2 piece rear main seal. Which, unlike the 1 piece you have your LT1 is much more difficult to replace.

I think he is talking about the front timing cover seal. Yes, it's possible, but like dad said-BE CAREFUL. Not sure if anyone makes a tool. Maaybe just take a piece of pipe the same size as the seal and wack it in there.

Yea, FRONT crank seal, not rear main. I told him to use a big socket, but if he's right about the cover being that thin, he might as well just pull it. Thanks for the help!

There is a tool that is used for this procedure but i tap them in all the time with no problem. Just make shure the damper snout is not grooved. If it is you have to sleeve it. TOM
