View Full Version : 2004 GTO Exhaust Questions....

12-09-2009, 02:44 PM
Alright sorry if i sound dumb....but i had a 2001 Z28 with pace setter long tubes, h-pipe, and true dual sweet thunders....It was insane! i loved it! The only problem was it was alot of trouble and pricey!

I am now about to get a 2004 GTO and i dont really know much about the exhaust on it...sorry if these are dumb questions but Can you run true duals on it? Or does it come stock like that? If so do you have clearance problems like on a TA or Z28?

Oh and im probably just going to do some exhaust with stock headers....maybe sweet thunder mufflers?? IDK yet. But if someone can suggest some good sounding exhaust and maybe a clip of it.... i would really appreciate it. Oh and i like living LOUD!!! So nothing queit please :naughty:

Someone please help!! lol

The 04 gto comes with a true dual exhaust stock on it. Muffler wise i would suggest either a flowmaster muffler or the spintech mufflers. I have flowmaster super 44's right now and they sound good. I would like it to be a little louder so im considering putting the spintech's on. They are both good though.

alright thanks i appreciate it. Im still debating on what mufflers i want to get yet. Im not sure

Might try posting the 2004-2006 GTO section for more and quicker replies.

The '04 LS1 cars come with true dual exhaust, but they both exit on the drivers side of the car. There are plenty of options available for headers and cat-backs, but I will tell you up front that NOTHING is cheap for these cars.

Go to you tube. You can hear all the different mufflers everyone is using.

Quit being an old woman Cole and do the muffler delete. It will sound legit man. Lay off the custom body work on this one too man ;)

The sound of exhaust is's all about opinion. You should listen to different sound clips of different setups first. has a sticky in the exhaust section of a bunch of different sound clips of exhaust setups.

If you want more options on exhaust, you can get an 05-06 bumper, heat shields, and hangers and have alot more options on your exhaust... just have to get 05-06 mid all fits just fine though....

Also, if you do headers, you might like the way the stock cat back sounds. Probably has the best tone out there but isn't that loud at all. Make the H-pipe functional and it changes the sound some. If you want loud, SLP or Spintech should be to your liking.

Like was already said, pretty subjective.

I have spintech super pro streets!!! sound good and really loud...but mines dumped!

He wont be doing headers anytime soon. Wants to keep this one sounding good but not spend the money on headers and mid pipes now. With stock manifolds and stock cats and resonators the muffler delete is pretty nice sounding...

12-17-2009, 05:52 PM
It'd be better to do pacesetters and leave the stock catback. More HP and MUCH better sound.

12-18-2009, 12:38 AM
Get some Longtubes (stainlessworks or Kooks FTW!!) and leave the stock cat back. It really sounds good. Of course I wanted the dual exit on both sides and went with the SW 1.75 LT's and a 05-06 magnaflow cat back with custom mids.........LOVE it.

12-18-2009, 01:52 AM
Person above, you're talking 2K....hes talking 300 bucks.

12-18-2009, 06:37 AM
I didn't see where he wanted to spend 300 but ok.........I stand by my original post. Get the long tube headers whether they be kooks, SW or pacesetters. Get the LT's.............but spend the $$ and at least get the pacesetters coated........

He's in ga man, Caoting would be a waste down here. No salt or harsh weather to deal with. Prob wont be doing headers on this one for quite some time if at all.

12-18-2009, 10:02 AM
Yeah i will probably do headers eventually but not for a while i lost alot of my money i spent on my 2001 z28 that got totaled so ill probably just go with the muffler delete. Anyone have video clips of any muffler deletes??

Go to Buster and get the muffler delte done. Then go take as many videos as you like.

Muffler delete sounds horrible.

Do pacesetter headers. About the same price as what you're thinking, more HP AND better sound.

This Attaway guy is everywhere.... how do i report him?

i would need around $500 to get the pacesetters and install them. im thinking ill just do the delete for now and get pacesetters this summer. if i dont like it ill throw some mufflers on it. I dont think it'll sound bad... im gonna do it right when i get the headers i just cant throw out a grand right now. i dont have it

12-20-2009, 07:34 PM
If that's the case, I would just save the money now to get headers later. A cat back basically doesn't do anything in the way of performance on a car with less than 430ish rwhp. Its more of a sound preference. The stock cat back actually sounds pretty good with headers and it doesn't cost anything other than the headers to get that sound.

Just something to think about

12-21-2009, 01:40 PM
Alright....change of plans....I was planning on runnig headers and Spintech mufflers eventually so i was thinking it would be a waist to spend money on a muffler delete when i can just get the spintechs now til i get headers....But i went on spintechs websit and theres about 1,000,000 different mufflers on there. I know i want the super pro streets but im not sure which ones to do. I dont want a catback i just want to get the mufflers and get it all welded up with the stock tips.... Can anyone tell me the exact mufflers to order that will fit or does it matter. I want to run 2.5 inch mufflers too. Thanks

12-21-2009, 07:18 PM
Want loud mufflers that are inexpensive? Check out the Dynomax race bullet mufflers.

Installing 2.5" diameter mufflers on the stock 2.25" catback is a waste, not to mention hard to do. Something with 2.25" inlet and outlet, about 11-12" long body (give or take) and 17-18" overall length (give or take) should work.

12-22-2009, 06:13 AM
you will get a million different answers on exhaust bro, but if you want loud and something that sounds good, get spintech and an xpipe, ive had a few exhaust setups, including magnaflow, and flow master. neither compare to the sound of spintech. heres a video of my gto with the spintechs.

12-25-2009, 09:59 PM
think about what you want too do to the car when you buy/plan exhaust setups,do you want to do alot of mods (500 plus) or just keep it mainly stock with a few bolt on's (under 500)... i have the JBA shorty headers with the stock exhaust and it sounds fine but i don't want to get attention either, I prefer the sleeper sound and look it's just a little different and nobody expects the response they get when they play.sometimes too much exhaust can kill HP/TQ a little.

12-28-2009, 11:10 PM
alright thanks i appreciate it. Im still debating on what mufflers i want to get yet. Im not sure

I'd go with some magnaflows. Personally, I like them because they're quiet in the low rpm's but when you stomp on it they really wake up. My 2 cents....

12-31-2009, 10:19 AM
alright thanks everyone. i ordered spintechs now so they are on the way. hopefully they will fit says for 05-06 but i was going to change to 2.5 in piping anyways so maybe they will. check these out and tell me what yal think.

12-31-2009, 08:47 PM
i think you deff should have done your research. i am by no means saying spintech is a bad company, they are far from it. they sound really good but there are far better choices.( my opinion) like for my girlfriends setup she has a 04 goat, and she went pacesetters, with stainless works 3in catback/ w turbo mufflers, and it is by far the best sounding exhaust on a gto that ive heard. and i have heard a ton of diff setups. but then again you said you where on a lower budget. so your options are lower. but we saved money by taking the old system out and selling it, and doing the headers are selfs to. then we took it to a buddies shop for the rest.

Definitely do some nice headers.. The power gain is worth it.

You can do a nice cat back when you have more bread.

01-10-2010, 02:43 PM
Alright well thanks for the help everyone i went with Spintechs.. i just got my car back yesterday and i love the sound! Kinda wanted it a little louder...but thats what the headers are for later on :)

Heres a sound clip of it if anyone want s to hear it

01-10-2010, 02:47 PM
I think i made a good decision :)

I would say go with a magnaflow exhaust only for the fact that Ive heard them and they sound great and there stainless steal so you arent going to have to worry about rusting out especially if u are in a state that gets snow and some real shitty winters. Just my opinion and opinions are like assholes everyone has one.

01-20-2010, 04:20 PM
if you havent order the Banshee inserts i have a brand new pair that i need to get rid of. i can get you a hell of a deal. i just need them gone. pm if you need em

01-22-2010, 11:50 PM
Wow that isn't loud. I have LTs with super 44s and it is flippin loud!!! I guess the cats make a huge difference.

01-24-2010, 10:46 PM
Should have gone with LT's and kept the stocker exhaust but its not my car. How does that saying go...........the luster of a good deal on cheap parts wears off long before the lasting glow you get from waiting and buying quality and doing things right.
