As much as it hurts me to do this, I am getting ready to drill my wheels and install screws. But before I start drilling I got a couple questions:
1) the wheel is 3/16" thk and the tire bead is 5/8". The screws are 3/4" long. So that means once I put the screws in, I only have 1/16" of rubber before the screw sticks through. Is this OK?
2) I read online where they recommend installing the screws at a slight angle to get more bite. However that would mean the screw head is not sitting flush to the wheel. Which way should I install them flat or at an angle?
3) Do I need to dab some RTV or anything into the hole before inserting the screws.

BTW I am installing 27" ET streets on 16" CCW wheels. I ordered the Mr Gasket wheel screw kit. I plan to drill the holes. Get the tires mounted. Install the screws and then have the tires balanced. What else am I doing wrong?

plan on them leaking down quicker after screwing them. Personally I'd just put high tack on the wheel bead area when they're mounted and hopefully they don't spin on the rim then. Otherwise they will leak down 90% of the time with screws, so plan on putting air in them every couple of days.

already tried that. The tires were spinning about 2" per pass, too much for my comfort.

adding air is not that big a deal, at least the tires will stay on the rims.

I talked to Doug @ ECS, so I guess I will answer my own questions.
1) the screw length is fine
2) install the screws flat
3) a dab of RTV will help prevent leaking

Well actually you do not have to install the screw all the way in. Do install the screws straight. My friend has never installed his screws all the way in and he runs his slicks tubeless and has not had one problem. He has never had a screw come out of the rim and traps 144 MPH.

I use lock washers on my screws and have never had one problem with them causing a hole in the tube.

I like the lock washer idea. I might try that. I can't imagine it will take much penetration into the tire to keep it from spinning.

Ive got a set of 28x10.5's ET Drags that Im gonna be running next spring, I also bought a screw "kit" w/my tubes. How many screws do you guys recommend per wheel??? If I use the little hole gauge/scrib that came w/the kit it spaces them out so there are 16 per wheel (IIRC)...... too many??

I ran 8 on each side with the hole gauge. 8 is plenty and probably a little over-kill for most cars. My tires actually leaked LESS air when i screwed them than with-out them.

If you're setup to run all 16 there's nothing wrong with that, if you have that chassis engineering degree wheel setup then you can space them for 8. Make sure both sides have the screws in the exact same place.

i always installed the screws half way, then i would back them out and grind the point off them, then put them in all the way, never had a leek!

just make sure when you install them that the screws are even from side to side. in other words draw a line straight across from the outside of the rim to the inside of the rim and make sure the screws are in the same line.
