Default can you run taller than a 28" slick on a 4th gen?

well thinking about my rear gear issues and how im going to run out of gear on the spray with some 28"s. well i much rather just switch out the tires than the gears.

so can i run say a 29" or 30" tall tire on the rear of my 97 formula firebird or am i going to have to modify something??

i think anything bigger than a 28" you're going to have to cut the bumper for sure, not sure what else.

Steve is about as good of an authority as your going to get. I would PM him. Sounds like you want to fit the biggest tire but not have to cut up the car.

Im running 29.5s. I had to cut the rear bumper a bit and take a flapper wheel on my grinder to the lip of the fender. I didnt have to take much off the fender. maybe an 1/8th of an inch. As long as you have a panhard bar itll make things much easier.

When you go from a 28 to a 29, 29.5 or 30 inch tire you have to start cutting the front and rear metal/plastic. You might also have to cut back the area near the front LCA mounting point.

I've often thought one way to minimize the surgery would be to run a longer driveshaft and push the rearend back a bit. Then you could just cut the rear bumper back.

Hoosier makes a 29x10.0 slick I think, that might the least intrusive tire to move up to.

That tire will fit, but even it needs extra clearance. 28x10 is about as big as you can go, unless you go with a radial that doesn't grow at all, in that case you can get away with a 295, but the car will need a minitub. If you pull the tires in an inch, you probably can get away with a little more.

The burkhart front end I bought has the arms narrowed an inch to pull the tires in a little, I'm 100% sure it will clear.

Not sure if I'll need the clearnace/height back, I only had an inch of drop built in not 2.. if I went with the 2 inch drop, a 28 inch tire would absolutely be needed.
