180º thermostat?
i have a 98 trans am and i bought a 180º thermostat recently and havent installed it yet but was just reading online in a few different places that the stock thermostat is 180º..... some places say the stock is 195º though. i plugged in a scan tool and my car which i think has the stocker runs between 190º and 192º at idle because my fan temps are set for a 180 stat and they seem to never go off now. so if i install the hypertech 180 stat will it actually run at 180 or will it run at the same temp it runs at now and should i have gone for a 160 stat which i hear runs at about 172º?

the stocker supposed to be like a 187 its a weird number the 160 helps consistancy and the 180 will warm up faster but they both will come up to the same temp that the fan comes on runnin down the highway the 160 will run cooler but that could hurt mpg if its a dd

yea im gonna go with the 160º stat. when i put the 180 in the boiling water yesterday it popped open at 190-192 or so which means that the car would be running right around 193-194 which is like stock. if i throw a 160 in there and it pops open at around 172 like people have said it does than the car would be running at around 175 on the highway which is much closer to where the ls1's optimum range of 178º is.

IMO, the 160 is too cold. I've tried different t-stats and didn't ever get the desired results. What worked PERFECTLY, was when I put the stock one back in and had my fan temps adjusted with tuning software. Now my car runs right where I want it!
