Default truck engine in a 4 gen camaro

can the ls series truck engine, fit in a fourth gen camaro? the truck intake manifold looks taller than the ls car intake manifold. also the heads intakes or ports are shaped differently? the trucks heads have a cathedral port shape, while the car has a square port shape. would like to install a lr4 / 4.8 engine in my 97 v6 m5 camaro.

The truck intake won't clear the factory hood. I'm putting an LR4 in my '95 'bird.

Get a 5.3. You can punch it out to a 5.7 using stock LS1 pistons and have a high compression iron blocked beast!

It won't clear either one. I'm running an Edelbrock LS1 EFI intake & their ultra low profile intake bellow. I still had to trim a small section of the center support of the hood out to make it fit. Find someone that's unloading a stock LS1 intake. They can be had for next to nothing.

I chose the LR4 just to be unique, and because I got a low-mileage one for a good deal. My Dad has always liked running 283 small blocks, so I am doing my own version in honor of that. It makes for a nice conversation piece too.

The 4.8L & 5.3L blocks are the same. You can bore out a 4.8L just as easily. In fact, a notation of both displacements is cast into the front of the blocks.

i choosed the 4.8 block for similar reasons. one to be different, two because chevy had a special edition supercharged 4.8 pickup truck, which i would like to supercharged this engine too. three i always wanted a 302 and this is the closet i can get.

i figured small piston, short stroke and small crankshaft = high revving
hp! after being balanced and blue printed, of course! looking for something around 400-450 hp. plus a cast iron block should put up better with the boost, than a aluminum block. i think.

Chevrolet didn't do those trucks at the factory. That was a conversion done by whomever Joe Gibbs contracted to do the work.

Thanks! There's no real "deadline" for the project. It's just a "whenever I can work on it" kind of thing.

Here's what you'll need to investigate when you go to supercharge your engine:

Gibbs/Magnuson-designed Eaton Generation V Roots-type supercharger/intercooler

That's kind of how I started with mine. I bought the car in March 2007, bought the engine in July 2008, pulled the V6 in August 2008, and it wasn't until this past Summer that I dropped the engine in the car.

I got all my UMI Performance suspension installed, gutted the interior, did partial mini tubs (inspired by Burkhart Chassis), welded the roll cage in, finished out the interior & even painted the exterior before even messing with putting the engine & trans in. There was a lot of other minor stuff that I did along the way, but I like you started in reverse so to speak.

If you do a lot of swapping of the stock suspension parts, you'll soon discover that the market is flooded with them. It's very hard to sell the stock stuff. In fact, I sold most of mine for scrap (at only 3 cents a pound). The V6 motor even went to the scrap place. The worn out trans netted a fair amount since it was aluminum. It wasn't the most profitable way to recoup money for the car, but it was better than just throwing the stuff away for nothing.

Well, Tommorow, the 4.8 LR4 in my silverado is getting some headers, straight pipes, a procharger p1sc, a lot of dyno time..... some new injectors and other goodies..... When its all said and done, Ill let you know what the 4.8 can do on 10-12 lbs of boost.

I think you are talking about this....

V8
4800

The Vortec 4800 LR4 is a V8 truck engine. Displacement is 4.8 L (4807 cc) with a 96.01 mm bore and 83 mm stroke. It is a de-bored and de-stroked cast iron version of the LS1 small-block from the Corvette with aluminum cylinder heads. It replaced the 5.0 L 5000 L30 for the 2003 full-size vans. The LR4 produces 270-350 hp (201-205 kW) and 285-290 ft·lbf (386-393 N·m) of torque. LR4s are manufactured at St. Catharines, Ontario and Romulus, Michigan.

The LR4 features electronic throttle control and does not need exhaust gas recirculation due to a new, more-powerful computer. The LR4 shares the same block and cylinder heads as the Vortec 5300.Supercharged aluminum versions said to produce 350 HP were considered for the silverado SS but were shelved. Cost and emissions issues were main considerations.
Quoted from http://en.allexperts.com/e/g/gm/gm_vortec_engine.htm

Apparently, the all aluminium supercharged version never happened.
