Default ECM Mounting locations - waterproof?

First, is the 411 LS1 ECM a waterproof system? I believe some of the Vette ECM's are but not sure of the 411. Assuming the 411 ECM is not and I decide to mount it on the inner fender which side down or sideways is preferable? Mounting in the engine compartment would certainly alleviate some headaches over under the dash. -Bob

It's weather resistant. I've some of the ones mounted in the front of the Astro and G-van have part of the fins eaten off the top of the cases from the salt spraying up there and they still worked. I think mounting in any direction except with the connector pointing up should be good, that way if any moisture should get past the seals on the plugs, it will be able to get back out

In the stock location, the pins face up on the 411.

In an F body, the drip rail on the cowl drains right into the pins. So, mounting it outside should be o.k.

I'm mounting mine in the engine bay, I really don't feel like lengthening the wires. I thought all the later computers were mounted under the hood?

Yes, it needs fresh air.

Here's how I mounted mine - facing down, towards the front of the engine bay by the fans, against the driver's inner fender. The PCM is blocked by the fan shroud, so the fan doesn't blow directly on it.

I used the two-piece C5 Corvette mount setup, which I highly recommend. It pinches the bottom of the PCM and allows you to safely face the PCM in any direction. It has 4 plastic feet on the back which you can sculpt with a grinder to match the contour of whatever you are mounting it on - like I did with the curved inner fender.

I also bought a 2003 Express van tray style PCM mount (this whole thing was trial an error). The mount would work great if you were mounting it to a flat surface. Unfortunately, I am now stuck with a tray style mount I cannot use.

Do you need to silicone any holes closed from wires that you pulled out of each connector?

You probably should. This will keep moisture from getting in between the plug and the ECM, and corroding the pins that actually are in use.
