Question Trans experts, give your thoughts on this (WOT downshifting)...

Is it any harder on the trans to (automatically) downshift from say OD (4th) to 1st at WOT than OD (4th) to 2nd?

I'm currently planning all my next Edit changes and I'm thinking about re-addressing my WOT downshift points. I had previously raised them to 37mph (for downshift to 1st) which has the trans going from OD back to 1st when going WOT at up to 37mph. I'm wondering how much extra wear is being created by allowing that 4 to 1 auto downshift vs say a 4-2 auto downshift.

The stock setting was a max of 32mph for going back to 1st, and I honestly can't remember if that was still in the range of a 4-1 downshift or if the car was still in 3rd at 32mph and under, thus only allowing a 3-1 downshift. Can anyone confirm that also?

And let me add further...

If I choose to keep my current settings, would it be preferred when going say 35mph, to manually downshifting to 3rd (D) before going WOT so as to allow a 3-1 downshift instead of 4-1?

If you have a big converter, there should really be no reason to go from 4th to 1st. 4th to 2nd is fine. I think if you do plan on doing hard kickdowns like that you're better off going from 3rd to 1st though. Just drive around in "D" if you plan on hammering the car like that. Keeps the band and any timing critical shifting out of the equation. That way the only thing that has to happen is the 3/4 clutches release, and you're in first. For a 4-1 kickdown, the 3/4's and the band must release first.
