Default t56 experts please have a look inside here.

Hi guys, im new to the site, I just bought a car from out of state , it has a GTO t56 in it, 06 i was told, car is a 1971 240z any way i towed it home on a car dolly , it was in neutral the whole way, about a 3 hour ride, when i got it home and unloaded it i notice now the tranny whines and it wont go in scond with out popping out, third grinds and over all it is hard to shift, i drove it around the block and its really bad, i drove the car before i bought it and it was perfect so me towing it with the rear wheels spinning must have hurt something, any ideas on what went wrong and is it something i can fix with ease or does it need to go to a tranny shop now? thanks for taking the time to look in.

If you towed it with the driveshaft in it, you probably screwed up the trans. With the driveshaft turning from the diff, it spins the output shaft in the trans as well. Since the input shaft and cluster gear are not turning to throw fluid on the rest of the parts, basically you ran it without fluid............

seen this a time or two, the small taperd bearing part#LM12749 on the end of the output shaft going into the input shaft has faild, you prob burnt the 3rd and 4th friction rings as well. Good luck with your build.

Typically you can expect to melt the plastic parts first. The fork pads are plastic and the cages for the speed bearings under the gears are plastic as well. Most T56 units have a steel cage for the 1st gear and reverse gears. I have seen those cages basically weld themself to the mainshaft and the gear locking up the unit or making it have hell moving and shifting.

To answer your question, its impossible to know without pulling it a part to see whats jacked up and whats not.

Did you happen to run a gto shifter or the pro 5.0 for an f-body? You know that you have to change out the shifter coupler to make the GTO M12 work with a f-body shifter. If not you will have nothing but trouble.

If you don't know how to identify what the problem might be and are mechanically inclined I would drop the tranny and take it to a shop for analysis
