Default center console removal and install 97-2002

Hello everyone. I removed 2 center consoles last week. Huge hassle, puting it back was even harder. I finally got it in but I scratched up my emergency break lever real bad. I will eventually be putting my friends custom painted center console in and I'm hoping there is a easier way. I unbolted all the nuts and screws, put the automatic shift back in to 2nd or 3rd. Tried to lift the console above the parking break lever and thats when the chaos starts. Is there an easier way. Thanks, John... It's on a Camaro

When you think the E-brake is all the way up, pull harder.

+1..

And if you're worried about scratching it, cover it with masking tape..

Yeah couple times my ebrake didnt go much higher as to point over the dash but one time i pulled and heard a nasty noise and it was vertical, the adjuster sprocket thing came loose or something, was an easy fix.

With the front of console under dash and e brake all the way up, it is hard to lift the console over e brake. I can't swing it around to remove sideways. Thats what caused me the problem, lifting it over e brake when all the way up because it is wedged uder dash board. 93-96 you can remove the center CD holder to remove replace console. Seems like no breaks on the 97 and up. Trying to keep car in mint condition and e brake handle is messed up. I'm going to do this all over again when I get my car back. Gonna have to find easier way. I'm going to check into a dash removal post because I have to do that also. Just realized that might be my lucky break, removing dash. Thanks,John

If you are going to take the dash out anyway, it'll make putting the console in a breeze

I you use a long thin flat tip screwdriver and release the small ratcheting arm down the side of the e-brake pivot the lever will pull straight up with no effort, but make sure you block the tires first.

The console comes out in two pieces. Like was said make sure you release the ratchet arm on the e brake and it will pull straight up. If you have the first part of the console that includes the shifter housing/cupholder. If should be a breeze to get off. I have never had any problem in my ta except for the seatbelts getting in the way. I know you have a camaro and auto could be different but i doubt it.

Thanks for the response, When you say ratcheting arm coming up do you mean up to the brake position, or up and OFF. I was able to find a 98 aoutomatic at the junk yard tried taking complete dash out. No luck. Gonna start a new post on this issue. I've been taking the console off in two pieces but I still had that tough time getting it out. So can I take the ratcheting brake arm off. Thanks, John.

The whole arm does not come off. If you pull back on the handle pretty hard you will see the catch that grabs into the teeth that engages the parking brake. All you have to do is put the screw driver between that and the teeth and it will let you pull the handle way past where you can normally. Then you will need to lift up slowly from the rear and swing it up while pulling back slighly. It should come right out. If it doesn't try to focus on why not. It may require you to play around with the e brake a little bit.

This is exactly what I did, and it makes removing and installing 100 times easier. Just like he said put the e brake down, place a straight edge screw driver in between the cam and gear and pull it up as far as you want!! When your done place the e brake all the way down and pull up and it resests itself.

I had to change the carpet in a different Camaro two weeks ago. The tip about using the screwdriver to wedge between the gear was a great help.
