Default did you just purchase a ls1 car with 50,000 or more? read this thread...

I have been in the ls1/ls6 game for ten years. I never owned one over 30,000 miles... i recently purchased a 99 TA with 70000....
higher milage cars are a whole different ball game. my car ran ok and shifted ok, but i was dissapointed in the performance.

so i hooked it up to autotap diagnostic software and was appauled. i was throwing lean codes, and it wasn't shifting right.

i changed my fuel filter to a wic first which made the car run tremendously better. .830mv vs .300mv
then i took apart the maf and thoroughly cleaned it with electrical cleaner. the wires were black and caked with dirt, kn oil etc.clean the outside thoroughly first, then dissasemble with care. clean the outside good, orings, then if the small maf wires are black then dont be shy, spray them until they are silver. i got up to a cm away and unloaded on them.
clean the iside of the lid, bellow, and tb.

change the oil, if the tranny fluid isn't pink change it too.

check the air filter

after the above the car runs like new. codes gone

It's amazing just how poorly these cars can run with a dirty MAF.

This is why I never use K&N filters on MAF equipped engines. Just not worth the hassle.

I would add changing the fuel filter and seafoaming the car to your list. But a dirty MAF can make a huge difference.

I second seafoaming. My car only has 30k miles right now so no need to do it yet, but it made a huge difference on some of my previous high mileage cars.

In fact my 89 240 beater had 102k and after seafoaming it one day it started to chirp second lol

I have heard this before, I was told the oil from k&n air filter gets trapped into the maf sensor and makes it run like crap. Though it has never happened to me I regularly clean my filter and recharge it. It has gotten a lot dirtier sice I did the ram air mod. This is good stuff to read about.

no reason to stay away from high mileage cars as long as you do a little maintenance. i bought my 99 TA with 97,000 miles for $6,000 w/ a perfect body and a WS6 hood but it ran like crap. changed the ripped trans mount, rear sway bushings needed to be replaced, and the cat was clogged when i did my exhaust. added new plugs/wires when i installed the headers plus a seafoam and the car runs good

I bought my Z28 2 years ago for $5000 with 80000 miles ran good but had alittle skip/hesitation around 2000rpms. I had the car dynoed last year when i first bought, it had 215 rwhp after my mass air was cleaned it picked up 80hp. If thats not a sign to clean it reguarly,I dont know what it.

I agree with the K and N oil getting clogged up on the MAF, but this can be prevented by not over oiling the air filter. I have run a k and N filter for the past 4 years now and I keep it clean, with a moderate amount of oil. There is no need to over oil these filters. And also even though they say do not use compressed air,....After the filter is clean, dry and oil has been applied, I take a clean cloth rag and gently blow air through the filter and the extra oil will be caught on the other side by the cloth and that way the oil will not collect on the MAF...Again be gentle with the air gun, but I have used this method many times and as long as you are careful, the extra oil will be removed and the filter should not be damaged.

Also a big +1 on keeping the fuel filter clean, and I think its always best to run 1/4 or more fuel to keep the fuel pump submerged in fuel to keep it running cool as well.
