Default 2-piece/1-piece driveshaft questions

My 98 V6 Camaro has a 2 piece drive shaft. GM quoted me $1200 for a replacement. I found an $800 carbon-fiber one piece driveshaft aftermarket for the Z28 or SS. Would this CF shaft be a good replacement, or are the sizes different from the V8 to V6?

By any chance is the center support bearing on your V6 making noise/going out? My V6 Firebird had that happen. Apparently it is a common problem. My shop tried to rebuild it but were not successful. They told me I would need a new driveshaft.

I was told and I have heard that many people have put in a 1-piece driveshaft and it works just fine. I was also told that all 2002 (?) models have the one-piece driveshaft already installed. Not sure this is correct though.

Bottom line, I think you can put in a stock V8 driveshaft in a V6 F-Body with no problems as long as it is balanced. Also you will probably have to find some way to remove your center bearing assembly. Just my 0.02.

I know the carrier bearing is damaged, but it hasnt started making noise, yet. Because of all the effort behind doing so, I am not at all interested in rebuilding the carrier. Also, because of all the variables and margins of error associated with having 3 u-joints, I want to go to one piece. Good to know that I'm all set to do this. Once I get the driveshaft, that is. Thanks for the response.

Why buy a carbon fiber shaft? You can get an aluminum or steel one made to length for less than half of that. Your carrier assembly in the center unbolts and comes completely off if I'm not mistaken, making it look like it was never there.

I thought that the weight savings would outweigh the cost of aluminum or steel. By saving that much weight, arent you helping fuel economy and performance by leaps?

Get a 1 piece aluminum shaft made and call it a day. Send me the $400 you save if you really want to get rid of it

okie dokie. A 1-piece V8 prop shaft will work on my Slomaro. CF is way overkill for my application. I'm lookin for an aluminum one-piece shaft. Most excellent, fellas. Much appreciated.

I put a one piece from a 96 LT1 5spd into my 94 V6 A4 that had a 2 piece. Fit like it belonged there. Now I have an aluminum from something that I am fixin to put in.

Thank you. This means as long as I stay within the same generation and version, I should be able to plug and play driveshafts all day long.
