Default Head question

Ok this is what I would like to do but looking for different options

I want to go with the Torquer V2 cam. The question that I have is should I go with the 5.3 stage 2.5 heads or the 243 stage 1. There isn’t much if any price difference.

What would be the benefits of each head and would the valves clear everything if I went with the 5.3 heads.

Just like most other people I would like to get the biggest bang for the buck. Keep in mind this is about all that I am willing to spend due to a budget. Thank you and all help is appreciated

The stage 2.5 5.3's have dang near the same flow as the 243's ported by patriot. I would go wtih those personally. You'll get a nice bump in compression with them.

what are you looking for outa the car??? i would pick something else than the tv2 (even though it has made some good numbers) and go with a custom cam set up. and then i would do some 243s

Default looking for

I do not want anything to aggressive. I like the idea of having a setup that has proven it’s self. I am looking to get around 400Hp to the rear wheels. I would like to run 11.50 in the 1/4. I am going to put a 3000 stall and a stage 2 performabuilt transmission the same time I do the head and cam swap.

Will the 5.3 heads work with that cam without doing anything else to the engine I.E cut pistons. I want to make sure the valves clear everything.

I know most people say to go with a custom cam. I have thought about it allot. The only reason I think it might not be a good idea for myself is I live in Alaska (Military). We have one track up here so most of my driving is going to be in the city. Not to mention my wife likes to drive my car as well. Long story short I need it to be as street able as possible that’s why I don’t want to go any bigger on the cam

Than you

With that head and cam package, I would rather see you get a 3400 or a 3600 stall, Thats what I have, home ported ls6 heads, tv2 cam, and a 3600 stall. I dail drive this setup just fine. Makes awesome power. With a 3600 stall and sticky tires I would think a 11.5 is very possible. A 3,000 stall may only get you high 11's.

424 through an auto with a 3600 converter and 12 bolt with 3.73's. I'm sure my home ported heads don't flow as good as an aftermarket set or the prc's.

My car ran a 10.89 @ 123 with a 1.506 60'. But that is not just by the head and cam swap, weight reduction has been done to the car.

A buddy I know has a full weight camaro with the same tv2 cam, and ported heads, it runs a 11.4 @ 118 1.590 60' with a 4,000 converter and 3.73 gears, our cars make very similar hp.

I ran the TV2 in my car for about 6 months and then added PRC Stage 1 LS6 243s and the car picked up 50 RWHP on the dyno and it also picked up the HP/Torque curve across the whole rpm range. My current SB has -2cc diamonds so I comment about any PTV clearance. I do know that TSP can sink your valve seats to pick up clearance. You will need a higher stalled torque convertor than 3000 if your going to see 11.50s.

Did you have to have your heads cut when you put the LS6 heads on or did everything clear? That is the only question I have right now. Just want to make sure everything clears

everytnign cleared on mine, some people even rin bigger cams with a stock valved ls6 head. I believe its when you get bigger valves is when you run into issues.

Well I will be home in a few months. I am going to start putting this thing together. I am sure I will have a hundred questions for everyone when the time comes.

If there is anything I might need to know please let me know.

make sure to get good oil pump, ls2 cam chain, ls7 lifters if money permits, chromoly pushrods, stock head gaskets, arp head bolts, if money permits, stock ones are fine, but not re-usable. stock head gaskets are fine. make sure to blow all coolant out of head bolt holes, and re-tap to ensure porper install tq. there is a writeup on it to on www.ls1howto.com for more info.

I am looking at the 5.3 PRC stage 2.5 they already come with the springs. I will probably just buy a compete kit that way I have everything that is needed to complete the install.
