unlocking it allows you use it on any service (except Verizon) and if you travel over seas allows you to use the sim cards you can buy over there to avoid AT&T's silly crazy high international roaming charges.

No, Verizon doesn't use the same cell service as AT&T. It uses the older CDMA(Think that's it)

Why would you want to unlock it if you stay in the US? There is no point and it will void your warranty and also can make it unstable. If your with AT&T and you want the banned from apple apps etc then you want to "Jail Break" it. Jail Breaking and Unlocking are TWO DIFFERENT THINGS!! (but you normally have to jail break it to unlock it.)

Easiest unlock by far was released a bit ago.
Google blackra1n. Download it to your pc, connect your iPhone, start blackra1n, click make it ra1n.
After your phone reboots itself, open blackra1n on your phone. Click on sn0w, and it's unlocked. If you want fancy mods download cydia installer too.
Look for winterboard, that lets you change tons of stuff, there's ringtone apps to make your own, and the best.. Text message alert sound changes. Highly suggest the original Mario bros 1up sound.
I can provide more details if needed. Hit me up on pm

Darn I'd do that as I want to change my text message sound, but can't since I have already updated my firmware 3.1.2

I've only scratched the surface on what you can do on a jailbroken iphone but it is still a huge upgrade from the original software. The best reason to jailbreak is that you can record video using cycorder on a 3G phone which apple pretends it doesn't have the ability to do. I use sbsettings to quickly adjust settings by swiping across the bar at the top instead of drilling into several menus. Backgrounder will let you multitask. WinterBoard gives you pretty much unlimited control over the display. My current display is 5 columns of clear icons with a moving wallpaper that constantly cycles through different pictures.

You can always restore the phone to the original software using itunes if you need to get warranty work. Some people don't realize this but jailbreaking doesn't mean you can't use the apple ap store. You can still download aps and use itunes to back it up.

yeah you can still use and get apps.

and some have jailbroke it and then went back and sent it in for work and were denied due to jailbreaking, so I think it just depends on the tech who gets it for the work.

There is a 99cent app to that you can buy for the 3g to video tape with. My mom bought it. works pretty slick.

Only issue I see with Jailbreaking is you have to make sure you don't update your phone until the Jailbreak that supports the new update comes out

Blackra1n works on 3.1.2
make sure you sync to backup your phone before you do this.
Also I believe if you put it into UDF mode (update firmware) it completly erases the phone/jailbreak/unlock, if you have something the shitty warrenty will cover

search SMS Mario on cydia after you install winterboard, winterboard is a must have to change the tones, slider, lockscreens etc. Most of the SMS sounds replace the "chime" tone, so to change it you need to select chime in the normal settings menu.
