Default 2 step help

I was thinking about buying a Lingenfelter 2 step to help with launching the car. LPE second version has a timing control. How do you know how much timing to pull, with out hurting anything else. How much timing is good to pull? I know every car is different, just a ball park. Is this something that a normal car guy can tune without damage to the motor or would it be best to have a tuner to tune?
Thanks

I currently do not have a 2-Step so you can take my opinion with a grain of salt but a quick search showed me that quite a few people were not happy with the Lingenfelter 2-Step and their customer service. MSD on the other hand seems to be pretty well liked and the one I'm planning on purchasing.

Sorry I couldn't offer any technical advice.
