Default Koni Front Install Questions

I'm going to be installing some Koni SA's in the future and the one's I bought (used) do not have the top washer or the dust covers. Is this something I can buy from Koni or can I reuse the dust covers from my Bilsteins? As for the washer, if I can buy it from a parts store, does anyone know what inside/outside diameter and thickness is required?

Also, is it safe to reuse the locking nuts or are they a one shot deal?

Finally, the car is a 2002, is there anything else I should replace while I am there?

Thanks for all the help guys.

You don't use dust covers with Konis and you can re-use the nut. You must use the washer. I don't know what size it is ... maybe someone else can chime in on that.

Why wouldn't you use dust covers? I am pretty sure the shocks come with them. I know my rear koni's did.

I don't remember using them on the rear, but I sold that car so I can't be sure. Fronts don't use them. For one thing, they would cover up the adjustment window. They're just not designed to use them.

Ok. Thanks.

Does anyone know what size washer I need?

Is there anything else I should replace while doing the shocks?

The car is a 2002 Camaro Z28 with around 47,000 miles.

Only thing you could really do is replace the front sway bar bushings. Mine were all cracking and looking rotted.

Thank you for the washer information Grifter. 2-1/8" OD, 3/8" ID, 1/8" Thick.

Two thing I noticed from those links.

1. Front Koni shocks DO come with dust covers like I had first suspected. They do not block the adjustment window. Does anyone know if the covers from my Bilsteins will fit or if I can order these from Koni?

2. Someone mentioned that a spring compressor was not necessary if you have aftermarket lowering springs. Can anyone else confirm this as it would be nice to save the $40 on a tool I will rarely ever use. I have Hypercoil springs.

Yes they come with dust covers and DONT EVER reuse a self locking not, The ones with a poly insert. Hardware is cheap. Sam sometimes recomends putting a different nut with a backup since some folks cant get the self locking on while compressing the springs and keeping the shaft from spinning. And some medium duty locktight. I know we get away with reusing some hardware. But in this area lots of corrosion happens. But hey-Its your car.

You will need a compressor regardless. The springs shouldn't have tension when tightening the upper nut. Not doing so is just asking for a huge clanging noise when hitting bumps and subsequently doing it this way anyways.

Sorry to be misleading in my posts ... the Koni covers are on the shock when you get them new. You just install the shock as delivered. In that respect, Konis aren't like Bilsteins where you have to install a separate cover by sliding it over the shaft - typically reusing the stock pieces. The stock/Bilstein type of cover won't work on Konis and would cover the adjustment window.
