Default A couple power steering rack questions...

Looking to change mine in the spring. Fluid is leaking from the boots.

Are there any write ups?

Will a v6 work on a v8. (guy on local forum has a v6 one for sale)

What am I looking time wise?

Any tips?

Thanks!

V6 rack will fit, no problem, but the gear ratio is incorrect. Get the right one.

I haven't changed a rack on a 4th gen, but other guys on this site say the oil pan is in the way of one of the mounting bolts. The fix is to cut the bolt and install a new one from the bottom up.

Is it easy to get a cutting tool in there to cut the top of the bolt? Don't remember exactly how much room there is and I'm getting ready to do mine as well...

Any other tips out there?

if your on your back doing this, good luck... sorry I dont have any tips, Its just one of those things that is going to suck. All day. then you need an alignment... Count the turns on your outter tie rods to help keep the alignment as close as possible.... but it doesnt really matter if your getting it aligned anyway....

^ Good tip, and YES, count the turns so you get it close.

Even a short trip to the aligment shop will scrub your tires.

i got an air saw in there to cut the head off of the bolt... it was a tight fit but it's manageable... use some red thread locker on the new bolt just for good measure... there are 2 different racks if i remember correctly, you will have to check your rpo codes to make sure you get the right one... if you get the wrong rack it will fit but it angles the steering shaft too much and it will hit your driver side header... it shouldn't take anywhere near a day to do, it's just 2 tie rod ends, 2 bolts, 2 lines, and the steering shaft you have to undo and it slides right out the front
