Default Building a turbo'd LS1 '67 Camaro...but have questions

This is my first ever swap like this...hell, these are the first Camaros I've ever owned. Have a 99 Z28 in good condition that I'm pulling the motor and trans, as well as some other parts, from to use in building my dad a turbo'd ls1 '67 Camaro. I'll try to keep a running log of it as I go, but I do have quite a few questions. I've read a bit about the truck manifold turbo setups and saw the thread of the guy who did the same as me in a '67 Camaro. However, I'm not very good at fabricating headers or anything that in depth. I also am unsure if the truck manifold option will work with the steering box location of the '67. Just wondering first off if anyone has any idea if the truck manifolds will work in a '67 for a turbo build? Secondly, what turbo do you guys suggest for a 383 stroker looking for 600+ on 93 octane? I'm planning a single turbo, but twins aren't out of the question. Motor will be 8.5 or 9.0 compression. My dad wants that much power, small block and decent gas mileage...which shouldn't be too hard with an LS1.

Thanks for any info you guys may have to help me figure out what turbo I want to go with, as this will ultimately be the deciding factor in turbo location and how I will have to make the headers/manifolds as well as intake piping.

You could do that easy with a 346 and a little TC76 all day long.

I think I am going to run a TC78. I want to keep the boost kind of low for street driving, but also have enough to turn up the wick on some race gas if my old man gets the edge...which I'm sure he will.

My first question is why a 383?
Virgina speed makes headers that should fit I think. You should give them a call.

Because that's the size motor my dad wants to run. I told him I would stick with factory displacement, but he wants to run a 383. And those headers are turbo headers? I will check it out. Thanks for the input.

I am also building a turbo LS1 in a '67 camaro. To answer your question, NO. Stock exhaust manifolds (car or truck style) will not work in a stock sub-frame. If you have an aftermarket sub-frame, I think they could work.

Not only does the exhaust manifold hit the steering box on the drivers side, the collectors turn down to close to the sub-frame and hit. I tried and tried to make them work, but just couldn't.

As far as a turbo, I dont think you could go wrong with a TC78. That is what is originally planned, but came across a 6.0L engine and decided to build a 408. So I sold my TC78 and bought a GT88 instead. The GT88 is probably a little big for the street, but I want a little turbo lag anyway so I can get a little traction.

Good Luck, and if you have any more questions or would like me to send you some pics, feel free to ask. I'll try to help the best I can.

Hey Lunitic, thanks for the info. And thanks for the pics. Those headers/manifolds look sweet.
