I rented a 3 Jaw from Advanced. You put down a deposit, you get it back when you return the tool, doesn't cost you a dime. They also had a valve spring compressor that worked well for me.

hmmmm...... Are you guys using a 2-ton or 5-ton puller? I remember renting one from autozone to take the balancer off my 5.3 and the jaws just kept slipping off, I'm getting kind of frustrated because no matter what I use nothing is working. I even used one like this:

Well guys I got a set of three, three arm pullers from harbor freight and I destroyed one of the pullers trying to get the balancer off. The bolts bent and the cone shaped thing on the end of the threaded rod crumbled. The threads on the shaft of the puller also stripped. I only got the balancer about half way off. Dammit! Off to the parts store for another puller.

I Used One Of The Deep 6" 3 Jaw Pullers. DON'T USE The Bolt That Has The Cone Lookin Thing On The End. I Read It's Not Good For The Crank. You Can Still Use It But Get A Socket And Put It Between The Crank And End Of The Puller Bolt (I Think I Used The Same Socket That I Took The Balancer Bolt Off With) It Takes Quite A Bit Of Force To Get It Off. Tighten It About 2 Turns Then Back It Off A Little. It's Time Consuming But It's Better Than Stripping The Threads On The Puller.

It almost killed me breaking the bolt loose on the engine stand. My big *** snap on impact wouldn't touch it. I used a 2ft 1/2 ratchet with a jack handle on it and my 220 lb brother laying on the engine to keep it from flipping. It sounded like a shotgun when it broke loose.
Would a hardered push rod be strong enough or do I need to find another kit with the correct length dowel in it?

Here's a thread from the past regarding the balancer removal. Notice post #13 for the wrong way to use a 3 jaw puller!!!
BTW, a little heat from a small propane torch on the head of the balancer bolt will really help break it loose.
