One quick question, anyone have a good source for metripacks? I need the cam and crank sensors, maybe some coilpack connectors. I just don't want to pay $20 a pop for em. Suggestions?
Thanks!

Very interesting. Given the front axle placement on the car I am interested in seeing what you come up with.

Sticking with RWD, I don't want to deal with a weak (in my opinion anyway) drivetrain. It'll get an IRS 8.8 or 9'' center section in the back. Front axles are taking a permanent vacation.
Rob, I saw video of your old car, loved it. I used to have an e36 myself, I have a soft spot for them.
Before anyone talks about the merits of 1.8ts and 2.7ts, I'm well aware, I have a TT with a huge turbo. The a4 is just a bit too heavy for small displacement. 402-408ci > 109ci.

nice thing with the a4 is the rack is mounted behind the motor. Not great for weight distribution, but it leaves lots of room for a turbo, no steering shaft to have a problem with!

It's not terrible, the vr6 swaps sit way up, i need to get more pictures and get a mockup trans before I talk, bellhousing things might be fun.

I'll get some temporary mounts welded up so I can sit the motor in there and slap the radiator support on. I'm pretty confident it'll fit without too much trouble.
What's pretty amazing is the stock motor mount stands are almost in the exact place they should be for the lsx! Don't think I'm going to use them (stangely set up), but it'll be a good place to mount the new ones. More to come.

It fits! Mockup motor came along with the mockup th400, tons of trans tunnel room, not too much room in front but I'll make it work. This is sitting on the crossmember no oil pan, add about 2" for the pan I plan on running. Intake will probably be a victor jr with an elbow or I'm going to put this one on backwards and run an intercooler where the battery is. Should be fun!!!

You guys really make me want to finish this thing asap! It's great when everyone likes the project. I haven't posted it on the audi boards yet, not until its done. As for under the car shots, i need to raise up the coilovers a LOT before I do that. Thing is still on the ground. I think I'm going to use welder series mounts (PM me if you want the address, I don't want to skirt any advertising rules). I mean, look at these things!!!!
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_sSUkcQE1RbM/S24zx_hKgwI/AAAAAAAAAsY/QrTcKzuuBoU/s800/LS2006.jpg They come in a kit so I can weld em up myself. I got some waterjet pricing and was pretty shocked at how high it was. The motor plates alone were $18 a piece. (just the small 4 hole mounts) These are over 100 but they're bent, laser cut, and perfect!
Wanted to know also, how fast have you seen people go on 255 ET street radials? I'm not sure im going to be able to fit a 275/50/15, I can definitely fit a 255/50/16 without a problem at all. Think that'll be enough?

Nice sleeper! You can go very quick on a 255. A few of us V8 Volvo guys used to run around on 245's, even, and if you get 'em sticky enough you're going to move.
Are you leaving the battery up front? If not, is there a reason why you didn't channel into that first section of bulkhead to get the engine set farther back? From what I can see in the B5 Passat I'm thinking about this swap for, it looks like this is just a 'dummy' bulkhead that isn't terribly structural. I could be very wrong, though.
Thanks for any info! Subscribed, of course.
Also, the pre-cut 'weld yourself' mount kits are the way to go. I used a set on my Volvo project (for SBC, not LSx) and it saved me a ton of time. Just made the base plates, a few cuts, and welded 'em. Done.
Keep posting!!! :D

The dummy bulkhead is being removed a bit, however the steering rack is right under there in the back. Makes plumbing a turbo up front absolute cake, can't setback the motor too far though without some very different setups. I think it'll be fine. Thanks for the advice on the 255s, I'll try em out!
The battery will be moved to the back if I can't fit a decent water to air in the engine bay easily. Kinda nice having everything right there and not having to run a rear firewall (the rear seats fold down and are rather useful!).

Need to break out the multimeter and see if I hooked up one of the lead pairs backwards (I'm sure I probably did) Crank trigger and cam trigger are hooked up, got my 12v feed from my computer for now. Thing works pretty damn good, I'm excited. Using ms2 extra fw, should work pretty good. Slowly getting there.

DIY megasquirt harness is almost there, need to solder some more grounds and map everything out, using an old dell computer for 12v, working pretty well. The IAC moves fine now but I can't get it to go into test mode, I'm not sure why. Any way to jog the IAC motor manually without entering a test mode? or just remap it to temp to change the motor position? Using the stock truck stepper iac if it matters.

Just making one. Theres enough places to mount things, theres a place to mount the drivetrain stabilizer thats available which looks pretty much identical to a transmission crossmember. You know the cradle isn't necessary? lol. The motor mounts are through bolted to the subframe, pretty elegant design. As for the rearend, thats gonna take some doing! Shouldn't be too much of a problem, but it'll be interesting to say the least. The car is MADE for a rear sump pan, and makes life so easy. The amount of room for headers is retarded, no steering rack, its awesome. Picking up the motor mounts today. We may or may not have an engine sitting in the bay later today

Car is awd, as far as I know the fwd hubs are the same. I'll see if I need to make some dust shields or something. I think it'll be fine.

More updates tomorrow. I need to get another allen key to get the strut bar off completely so I can finish clearancing the second firewall. No brake lines or steering racks were harmed in the making of this car! Also bolted up the converter to the flexplate, Rossler Terminator 2 TH400 should be here any day, and we'll see what we can slap in there. When you're done with the project, and if you get time, can you outline the firewall mods a bit more? It looks so clean, like you were able to just peel parts of it away but I'm sure it wasn't that easy.
I love this project...
Angle grinder, lots of blades, a trip to the ER with metal in my eye. The 2nd firewall is only held on with tack welds. It's not that hard to remove. I slit a hole down the middle and did some relief cuts and peeled it away basically. I have the plasma cutter for it today =)

Yup, I have two 8.8 center sections inbound from MKVIIIs, one is a 3.27 limited slip and will find a home in the a4 =) 255/50/16s MAY fit, so I'm just gonna wing it. I'm plasma cutting the rest of the firewall out today (with eye protection). Got another 5.3 inbound for this or the s10.

LS1 starter, TCI 4l80/th400 flexplate. Wtf? Do I need a 6.0 or normal small block starter to make up the difference?

You'll need the TCI 399753 flexplate. It has the 11.1" bolt pattern for the converter. It's difficult to tell from the pic...but how far away is the starter pinion from the flexplate gear?

Really really near the starter. I was chatting with a buddy and he said when the starter engages it shoots out a little. That'd explain the rotation and chamfer on the teeth!
I have 399754, truck motor to 4l80e th400 pattern flexplate. The converter fits just fine on the flexplate, its just the starter offset thats strange. My th400 converter is a wide bolt pattern like a 4l80e.
The gear is called a bendix apparently, and pushed out when the starter is engaged. Wee!

No worries, I just couldn't figure out what you were asking and that's all I came up w/ but wanted to be sure.
W/ those starters though, you still need to set them up so they engage correctly, can't be to tight (may just jam in the ring gear or not hit the face of the ring gear and not engage at all) or to loose (strip the teeth from the ring gear and/or starter or again not engage at all missing the ring gear completely. That's really the only thing I hated about that starter on my old SBC, just a little much to set up when you didn't realize it should have been done while you had the engine out of the car:bang:.

I'm almost done narrowing a 31 spline 8.8 for the pickup. It's probably going to get done first and test the motor. Running into some little roadblocks on the audi. Nothing major, just stuff that I need to get sorted.
And to answer your question-
No, the mr2 spyder has a built in pressure sensor that senses pump demand so it'll run at 4 amps when not in use, light enough that it'll be fine. Unless the accelerator pedal sticks =)

You appear to be using Scd. 40 SS pipe and fittings (1.90" OD) having an 0.145" wall.
AIR, Scd 10 SS pipe and fittings are readily available (0.109" wall).
Scd 10 pipe is (IMO) overkill for making a r-e-a-l-l-y robust exhaust system. Pretty sure Schedule 5 SS pipe is available (0.065" wall). Don't know about Scd. 5 fittings though.
Why make non-structural parts heavy for the sake of being heavy.
Beautiful workmanship though (heavyweight or not)

TH400 fits fine in the tunnel. I want the motor as far back as possible (stock weight distribution is horrific) and the bellhousing is a bit too deep and rests too close to the rack for my liking. I need to test fit with a T5. Car will probably end up with a tko at some point. I figure a clutch takes up less space than a converter

Thanks man! Small victories one step at a time is the only way I'm going to get this project done. Dropping off the rearend today to get narrowed (I don't intend to do it very much so the fixture is a bit much $$$$ for me). It's an s197 mustang rear, 31 spline with trac-loc, shortening it 20 inches (yes 20 inches, its a WIDE rearend. Track width should end up at 45" or thereabouts, bout 10" narrower than a stock s10. I can just run a really dished rim and make up for it if I'm not mistaken. Right now going for a 15x12 with the 325/50/15 on it. Transmission crossmember gets done today, then when the rearend comes back I can finally mock stuff up for the rear end build!
Racing seats on the way, It has a bench seat that was torn and covered in dog hair (makes a great shop couch!) After the welding on the transmission crossmember is done, i can go ahead and paint the rest of the front of the chassis, put the suspension in, and get a ride height figured out. Or order overly expensive drop spindles. FML (I need belltech 2102s if anyone has em, I'm running c5 brakes on 98 blazer spindles)

Motor is in, 3 or 4 degrees angled down which should be fine, need some more crossmember mods, the starter has some minor space issues, and I need to drop the crossmember down a little bit. Overall not a very hard setup. The motor mounts are a few inches off from stock, kind of scary, and the TRUCK crank pulley is just touching the snub mount (where the old motor touched too) so overall the motor is fitting amazing well. The steering rack will clear, everything looks great. Might even be able to fit a big downpipe or some longtubes!!! :D:D:D More tomorrow!!!

What the hell pan am I going to use. I think I'm going to mod and weld up my LH8 pan. I need a few more inches to fit it pefectly. Almost there though. Need to mod so I can get the shit on easily. my moroso pan doesn't wok either and the truck pan, well I didn't even bother. Ugh, I hate to cut up the LH8 pan but it seems like the only way at this point, unless I take the flexplate off first, dunno how easy thats going to be to install with a trans behind it. I kind of want to get things able to be taken out with the motor/trans as a whole.

Your ci displacement is kinda in between those two turbo sizes. 370 = 76mm, 408 = 88mm when trying to build a street-able set-up.

VWAG convert myself I love that body esp RS4'ed a bit. Who needs body mods when youve got that motor. +1
