Default Make your own oil cap breather ~$20 *Guide*

To try to reduce my oil consumption I decided to try running a breather instead of a PCV system. Most breathers are around $50 and seem very over priced so I decided to make my own, this can be done even cheaper if you decided to use you stock oil cap.

1. Go buy on of those small breathers at Advance Auto, Pep Boys, AutoZone, etc. They run around $12.

2. Napa carries replacement oil caps for most cars, mine ran $6.

3. This is the only real "hard part". You'll need to drill though the bottom of the cap up though the top. I set mine on a block of wood and held it with my feet. I used 3 bits, gradually stepping up to a 1/2" bit. Beyond that I used a dremel with one of those side moving drill bits to enlarge the hole, be sure to stop and check regularly. If you go large a bit of RTV can be used.

4. Heat up the rubber on the filter a bit with heat gun or hot water, then slip it into the oil cap and enjoy your 1/2 price breather.

seems like a vacuum leak to me too.

then again i tried to discuss that on this thread about breathers and got blasted by Damian.

seems pretty obvious that it would cause a vacuum leak just like when i had a hole in my pcv line.

You don't run a breather and PCV together though (If you really wanna do it right). It's one or the other.

How is it a vaccume leak? The way I see that scenario the PCV system will have 2 sources to draw fresh air from. Thats not a vaccume leak if the entire PCV system is left intact.

just tto add to this a little. The PCV system draws a set volume of air thru it. The valve limits it so let's say as an example it draws 100cfm at an idle. That 100 CFM is being drawn thru the fresh air intake in the TB.if you added a breather it would in theory then pull 50 cfm thru the TB and 50 thru the newly added breather but the overall volume is a fixed amount.
