Default Carb set-up 5.3l in '86 c-10

Got a '86 c-10 shortbed and put a 5.3 and th350 trans in. Stock Engine with the dual plane edelbrock intake and 670 holley street avenger. Used a Jegs fuel pump, 14psi max and added an inline regulator. Also used the 6ls MSD ignition box for the coils.

Hooked everything up and it fired up first try. I still need to tune it but would rather correct a few things first:

1.) I have the alternator that came with the engine...it's got a 4 prong male connection in addition to the large gauge charging wire. Obviously i would like to use this alternator but need to know which pins to use to activate this sucker.

2.) I also need to put a fuel pressure gauge inline on the fuel line and adjust the regulator...currently showing signs of starvation. What psi would get me in the ballpark?

3.) I am also going to replace the thermostat due to peace of mind..a stock replacement would suffice, correct? no reason to change temps?

4.) bought the 6LS MSD ignition box due to laptop tuneability, i will have totune with the laptop later, so i put the number 3 pill in and it ran decent, i guess.....what pill or timing curve would be the best for a stock, carbed 5.3?

thanks in advance

1. Pin B needs to have 12v switched power, running through a 470 ohm resistor connected to it. That will make it charge.
2. you need 58lbs fuel pressure.
3. Go to a 180 thermostat.
4. throw all the pills in the trash and use the laptop.

thanks for the reply...

these resistors can be gotten from radioshack? never dealt with resistors although i understand the concept.

58lb of fuel pressure maybe a little much for a carb...lol did you mean 5 to 8?

Just curious, why do you recommend a 180* thermostat? what's stock?

thanks again

im running the same setup, make sure you put a bigger accelerator pump in your carb, i had a off idle stumble, installed a 50cc pump like everyone here recomended and it cured the problem. still havent computer tuned yet, just running a pill in it for now. still runs good though

You might want to re-read his post again *LS1MCSS*....It's a CARBURETED engine. I run a blue Holley pump on my 6.0, and set the regulator at 6 LBS. I learned one thing the hard way....do NOT buy and use an oil filled fuel pressure guage. Drove me crazy trying to figure out why the pressure would gradually go down as the engine warmed up. One of the members on here finally told me it was the guage. Bought a normal guage..problem solved. I would go ahead and use the #3 pill until I got the rest of it sorted out and then, if I needed to make changes, I would go from there. I'm a firm believer in keeping things simple and doing one change at a time. Just my .02 cents worth. Good luck! Ron
I also re-read your post, LOL and noticed you are running the dual plane intake. I wouldn't think you would need the 50 CC pump, at least in my experiance.

HIFI875, you're running the 670 street avenger? I seem to have perfect off idle with what i have currently, just want's to fade out when it gets above 3k rpm, i'll have to stick a gauge on it and see where i'm at.

If you don't have a 470 ohm resistor you can use a light bulb instead. If you have one it is meant to be hooked up to the charge light in the dash.

Yep, missed the carbed part. 6 or 7 PSi will be better for the fuel pressure.

got the alternator working.

i went to radioshack and bought a .99 cent pack of 470 ohm resistors, put one inline on a switched 12v and hooked it to the "b" pin on the 4 prong hook up and voila- 14 volts.

I am doing the same swap, but my 5.3 alternator has a 2 pin connector. I was told the engine was a 2006 model. I converted it to the carb set up and want to use the original alternator in my Monte Carlo.

My Monte has the original 2 wire flat plug. One wire is brown and the other is red. I think the brown wire goes to the guage (it runs into the firewall) and the red wire (it's about 3" long with a round connector) just loops down to the 12 volt stud on the back of the alternator with the wire that runs to the battery. The stock 5.3 alternator plug has a 2 pin as well but round or oblong. Does one pin on the 5.3 atl feed the guage and the other trigger the charge?

Nope. One wire should feed your gauge, and the other is just power. I think you still have to have a resistor inline with that wire simulating the voltage light on the dash. These alternators turn themselves on and off depending on RPM's.

So did you find out where the other pins go to.
I want to run a voltage gauge in my dash.
