Talking 1998 f-body LS1, Rebuild, need some assistance.

Hello everyone,

I currently have a 1998 Camaro Z28 LS1 motor that i took apart and started to rebuild it for my swap.

The LS1 will be going into my 1964 Chevy Impala.

As of today the entire top half of the motor is off the block.

Heads are off, intake mani, valley cover, timing cover, crank, etc etc..

My Plans are to replace the head gaskets/bolts, oil pump, timing chain along with other miscellaneous gaskets/seals... basically freshen up the motor in order to minimize any failures the 12 year old motor with 77K might have seen.

i have a few questions...

1)I had to remove the rocker arm bolt to take the head off, can i re-use the original rocker arm bolt or do i need to replace them?

2)The heads were sent out to the machine shop to get cleaned up and pressure tested, once i get them back is there a specific procedure to re-install them with the OE rods and rocker arms?

3)How hard is it to replace the timing chain?

any tips/ advice/ or DIY threads would be great!

thanks again!

1) You can re-use the rocker bolts

2) Do not re-use head bolts, make sure block surface is clean, and torque the heads in a two pass sequence.

3) The time chain is easy, you just have to line up the small dots on the sprockets to get the timing correct. May take a few tries.

Good Luck!
