Default 1986 F150 with LQ9

I have a fuel injected 1986 F150 with the 5.0 and c6 transmission at the moment. Was looking to rebuild my 302 and get around 400hp. Until last night i came across a bad *** deal on an LQ9. I had never heard of one before, but looked it up and found tons of info, and saw it was a nice motor. Well i got a 2006 LQ9 motor with pcm, all the accessories, wiring harness, and other goodies sitting in my garage on blocks right now. Motor has 45k on it and came with MSD super conductor wires.

Should i get a gauge cluster from a Silvarado SS or something with all the computer controlled crap on it so my new harness plugs right in?
I will also need a pedal with a TPS sensor from a truck. Can i use any GM tps sensor pedal? or will i need to use one specifically for the lq9?

And this is a shot in the dark, but can i reuse my driveshaft, like will it go into the GM transmission? Or will i have to get this all new.

I bought this F150 a month ago with 120k miles on it, rust free, in great shape. for 750 bucks.

I plan on swapping in the lq9 once i get a transmission, probably going with a 4l60e until i can find and afford a good 4L65e.

So besides the wiring harness nightmare, what else can i expect to hit with my swap? What else do i need to make the thing run? What stays and what goes? I havent seen another F150 swap on this forum, tried searching with a few different keywords. I will be gathering all the parts and then doing the project to keep as little down time as possible on the truck. Currently have an 3.08 rear end, but will be doing a 3.73 swap in the future with a new LSD.

Look forward to doing this, my first engine swap. I have a buddy with a shop with a lift, all the tools i could ever need, and he knows his way around engines and what not pretty good, he used to build chevy 350's in older trucks.

Heres my engine.

Its all going into

about a year ago i wanted to do the same swap in a first gen lightning(93-95). The deal on the truck fell through so i didnt get to do it but is not that bad. I know of one first gen lightning on nloc.net that has an lq4 in it. The wiring isnt that bad just take your time. For headers im pretty sure you can run 99-2006 silverado long tubes.

That's my buddy "4runoma". Palomba, he's the one I was telling you about. He's a mod and will be pretty active on www.lsxfox.com when we get going good. If you'd like, go ahead and start a build thread there.

I chuckle a bit each time I see this. Without Ford, you guys would still be in the LTs. Kasse was a designer on the LS engines and is a Ford guy...Hmmm...that may be why you can bolt the heads to a 302 Ford.

The same drunken dopers buid Fords that build Chevys.

None the less, IMHO, this is one of the better swaps because you get the best part of GM...the engine. And you don't get stuck with the interrior parts that break and fall apart everytime you turn around.

You sure that's an 06? 2005 and up LQ9s all had electric fans (not clutch fan).

Given that it came with the 3 piece engine covers, it's an engine out of a 1500 series model. And since they all got electric fans in 2005, that is indeed a 2003 or 04 engine. Not that it matters since it's in such good condition. To determine 4 vs. 9 just take a screwdriver and run it in the spark plug hole. It it's flat its a lq9, if notched its lq4

pulled a plug, but theres not much room to move the screwdriver around, so i couldent tell, nor see very well with a flashlight. Is the vin on the engine possibly? It feels flat, but honestly not sure. 317 is casted on the heads in the corner.

The block is stamped with D293 just above the water pump, that would make it March 29th 2003 correct? So probably in a 2004 vehicle.

Exactly. Taking what you feel is the best of all worlds is what it's about.

03 or 04, it's impossible to tell. My block was cast in 01, it's an 02 motor.

The distinction between a LQ9 and LQ4 pre-2005 is a mildly important one as the 9 had stronger connecting rods versus the LQ4 which uses standard LS1 style con rods. N/A it makes no difference, but per those who have pushed these motors with boost, the stronger connecting rods are good for 950 fwhp. The lq4 rods will bend around 850 fwhp.

he swears up and down it was from a 2006 SS. The fan is not attached, its just sitting there, Could it have been added? The pistons feel flat to me. So im guessing its an LQ9 out of a silvarado SS. I may go with electric fans and take this fan and clutch off anyways.
