Default 76' 350 SBC Smog Era - ?'s

Hey guys,

Im going to go look at an old 84 monte carlo with a 350/350 from a 1976 camaro for pretty cheap this weekend, i need some sort of muscle car and i think it will be a cool project over time.

I know these motors are low compression (8.5:1) and made little power from the factory, but the car has headers, new manifold, carb, and ignition, basically making it a regular 350 with low compression instead of a emissions restricted one?

Anyways, what power can i make out of the car considering i put some cheaper milled heads and a small solid flat tappet cam? 300 hp? is there any potential in a low compression motor?

Depends on the heads and cam, problem with a solid flat tappet cam is they you wont be able to get the compression where it should be to make it run right with the duration that a solid cam is going to provide, use a comp extreme energy hydraulic flat tappet in the 224/230 grind on a 110 LSA, .477 on the intake side and i cannot remember the exhaust, but a set of 64cc heads will up the compression if it has the 76cc heads(im sure it might), that with headers and a performer RPM intake ad a holley 650 carb will make you happy till you get a budget for a built engine, not to mention all the parts will swap out like headers, intake and carb soyou are not going to have to buy any of that again.

thx ZONE - hopefully the car looks ok and i can buy it, i was reading on another forum that putting the cam on a real tight centerline and LSA helps with a low compression motor to make it snappier and more responsive, like 212/218 .450 .450 106/102

what are some good heads? i hear the summit race heads are decent

A set of sumit vortec heads would do wonder snad ar enot lift limited like stock vortecs and are less crack prone, so if you fgo thet route you might want to lok into our sponsors here like Patriot, they sell a bigger vortec heads for about 50$ more and flow way better:

Summit heads are made by dart. Nothing wrong with dart but summit vortec versions dont even flow any close to gm vortecs. If i was looking for vortecs, i would get the gm versions with upgraded springs from scroggin dickey.
