Generation IV External Engine - L92 intake-how bad can it really be?

I just sourced a complete L92 from a rollover escalade with very low mileage. Got the harness, ecm, pedal and complete engine.
I want to keep the VVT in it and it'll be going into my 71 chevelle to replace the 500ci BBC.
I've done lots of searching on this topic and noticed how much power the Mast L92 makes. 530hp using the L92 intake. It's pretty ugly if it it's left uncovered, but I already have all this stuff and thats about the most power i'd need out of it. I'm taking it down from a 640hp setup.
The other question is there's lots of opinions on harnesses, but if i'm keeping the VVT, and L92 intake wouldn't I be better off keeping the OEM harness and getting it modified to run stand alone? I already own all this stuff and i've found lots of places that can modify the harness for a reasonable price.
I've been lurking on this site for a while and a search usually answered any questions I had so I didn't have to repost and beat a topic to death that's been answered already.

i would post this in conversion,,probly get more action..
i have ly6 in my chevelle now.. not running yet.. i had both ls3 intake and truck intake.. ,truck one sits high..so you'll prob need a 2"cowl hood or lil bigger to clear.. . someone said it flowed the same as ls3 intake till about 5500rpm.. then of course the ls3 beat it there.. i sold the truck intake and keep the ls3 intake ..but i might sell that nd go for a eldrbrock intake..efi//
if i was you .i would keep everything u have,,get harness modified,standalone.. get ecm vats deleted.. then crank her up and run it..

its not that ugly, since this pic i re-routed a few hoses to clean it up and it looks kinda mad-max, i used a stock cable throttle body, the small ls1 type and still ran 10.7 with mufflers on.

Its funny how a couple bad builds using the fast 102 for LS3 heads have people regurgitating this bs that the Fast intake will make your car slower.

It would be better described as not worth the money for the minimal gain. When you see all of the big shops, LG and others, all say the same thing, when they could be making money off these intakes and they are not pushing them, you know something isn't right with them.
The bang for the buck is not there.

I agree 100%, Just tired of people saying you LOSE hp with one, Or go slower with one, Thats just ridiculous. I just picked a used one up for $625 so im using it rather then buy an Ls3 and have it ported.

From the testing we have done, they are really pretty good. Other than the looking really bad part, they function just fine.
It will be cheapest to get your stock harness modified rather than buying a new one.

Where did you find your L92 ?
What was your cost ?
I want this engine and the tranny that will come with it on my 68 chevelle.

I would look into a L76/LS3 Intake.

Agreed..when I started reading FAST's specs on it I just about :barf:..
Then I about pissed myself laughing about how this thing was supposed to be remarkable compared to the stock one.
I'll stick with my L76 and my Holley 90mm..it pulls strong up to 6500.
I will say FAST made good with their Cathedral Head Intake a few years ago, I guess these Square Port Heads must be hard to figure out.

Let me tell you something about those tall truck intakes, guys are cutting them in 1/2 and deep porting them and gettings upwards of 40+ hp gains. Spoke to a guy on YB about one, I wanted to stuff one into my Trans Am but was told it wouldn't fit. Screw those other intakes, keep the truck intake, go on YB and start a thread in the LS section and get yours ported.

They can get the HP gain..but how far does the powerband last?

I found an article that mentions when Comp Cams was doing R+D on their vvt cams, the L92 intake actually made more power than the L76/LS3 intakes. I don't have the specifics, but it was posted in an GMHTP article. Richard@wcch also posted a great thread on the flow numbers of the same intakes and the L76 seems to have bug gains in flow over .400" over the L92. The LS3 kind of intakes that are built to meet hood clearance limitations. I'm no expert, but the L92 has longer runners and more plenum volume and that can affect HP levels and it's something that isn't revealed with a flowbench as it affects cylinder filling on each intake stroke.
I don't really know, or haven't seen enough dyno results to have solid ammo on this, but i'm gonna stick with it for now and see what kind of numbers I get from it.
So asides from it being 'ugly' I put more importance on function over a pretty engine under the hood and I have the clearance to make it work. I have friends who fabricate custom carbon fibre parts so i'm sure I can make it aesthetically pleasing. I'm having the intake opened up by LS2 port works and sending the heads out for a CNC port job.
Short block will remain 6.2l and it will be freshened up and balanced. It started out from a very low mileage truck that was wrecked, so it's just getting torn down and freshened up. It'll be running a Comp stick and 1 7/8 A-body swap headers

If you have a hydraulic roller the powerband doesn't have to go far at all and you would make KILLER torque and low rpm hp through the whole curve until she runs out.
I had my shift light set at 6200 with my 441. She actually started to fall off before that, like around 58-5900 she would start creeping down before the shift.

My 402 on the Dyno with the L76 peaked at 6300..I shift at 6500..I don't see it being much of a difference with the 408.

I would think that with longer runners and a lot more volume, the L92 intake would make some sick power. I have a VFN ram air w/ a 4'' cowl, I wonder if this would fit?

I'm running a 4" hood, but it'll be a while until the engine is set in the frame. It's gotta work, i'm running a tall deck BBC, with a vic jr, 1" wilson spacer and a 4" air filter and I still have about 2" of space.
