My oil psi is at 20 at idle and 40 at speed, Think it could be a piece of sludge or is my oil pump on it's way out? I need suggestions to go with on a new oil pump.

i experienced the same problem recently and just fixed it yesterday. read my posts for the past few days and youll see what im talking about.

it turns out it was my OPSU (oil pressure sending unit).

cliff notes
-I had replaced the OPSU 9 months ago when i did my IM swap
-Late December- oil pressure would be at 20-25psi at warm idle
-changed oil and filter twice in one week. nothing changed
-ran seafoam in the crankcase thinking i built up sludge around the pickup tube. nothing changed
-changed the oil pump, thinking the pressure relief valve was screwed up. nothing changed (psi did increase a little because i swapped to a ported ls6 pump)
-exhausted all options. the only other problems that could have caused a low psi was a faulty OPSU (even though i changed it 9 months prior) or my lower assembly was shot to ****
-changed the OPSU in 15* weather. Oil pressure reading was back where it should be. problem solved

There's nothing wrong with 20/40.

btw, what the year/make/model of your car?

change your oil and filter and see if that does anything. if not, change the OPSU and see if thats the problem.

i have seen on several truck that the pickup o-ring has deteriated and is causing the oil pump to pick up air. dont knwo if teh cars are teh same way, but i would think they are. you are looking in about 40 bucks in parts form the dealer. o-ring and pan gasket.

do the smart thing a replace the OPSU first.

I had the same problem a few weeks ago. Oil pressure was reading low and i went all out and did a Thunder racing oil pump. After intstall, i still had low pressure. Changed the OPSU and problem solved
