well maybe your track doesn't enforce it but yes it is required for 13.99 and quicker for nhra as stated in the rule book.

Actually, the measurement is no more than 6", and my local track lets cars run low 10's with no rollbar. So...

But anytime you're running a stock driveshaft with drag radials or greater, it's a good idea. I've seen the shafts pretzel, and I've seen loops protect the floor pans.

-Andrew (even my friends who don't have rollbars - run loops )

I don’t know whether there have been any recent changes but the cutoff used to be 12.99 on street tires and 13.99 if you are running slicks. For 1/8-mile tracks, it was 8.14 on street tires.

Years ago I saw a car snap the front u-joint. The drive shaft dropped down, dug into the pavement and catapulted the back of the car a couple of feet in the air. He was lucky the car didn’t hit the wall or even roll. Don’t take chances; get a loop even if your track doesn’t enforce the rule.

not necessary for front and rear, just in front they're worried about dropping the driveshaft and you going flying through the air.
