Swaping T56 LT tailshaft on to t56 LS unit
Hi there,
I am stuck with a problem here...
Have a T56 from CTS-V 2005 to swap into my 99 miata but the unit is too long ! I also got a 1996 LT T56 out of a SS Camaro that would fit but flywheel is to small to get to the LS starter. Bolt from flywheel also doesnt match LS crank.
I have like 3 options:
1. Keep the LT T56 with same flywheel and clutch and find a starter that bolt-in the LS block and reach the old LT T56 flywheel. Then goto a machinist modify the flywheel bolt pattern... but wich starter would fit there
2. Keep the LT T56, fit the LS flywheel and clutch but then I would have to fit a new cylindar (wich one again) and I<m not sure the center shaft would be long enough...
3. Swaping T56 LT tailshaft on to t56 LS unit... CAN THIS BE DONE
Wich one of these options would be less hassle and does somebody knows the recepe
thanks

You cannot swap an f body tailhousing onto a CTSV unit. You will need to use the internals from the CTSV, a GTO mainshaft, F body tailhousing, F body shift selector, F body main shift rail and a few other minor conversion parts.

You need to purchase a GTO mainshaft, swap all the CTSv internals to it (assuming it's a 2005, otherwise you'll have more issues). Then use the tailhousing and shift rail from your LT1 unit along with some small parts (shift selector, mainshaft caged bearing, VSS reluctor, etc.) and build a GTO clone..
Not for the faint of heart or someone never having been inside a T56 before though..
If you're still interested, I can help guide you through if you'd like.. I've done a dozen or so conversions and have pics online.

Here's a recent conversion:

The owner purchase used parts for the conversion to save some $.
Here's another:
