Default Once and For All: 17s vs 18s (Steve? Andy?)

What do the big appearance guys think of this topic. Which would you go with, 17s or 18s on a stock height, semi lowered (Hotchkis, SLP/Eibach), and lowered (Pro Kit, G2) F-Body? Also since companies like Boyd Coddington and others off reverse lip mounting for using an 18" center with a 17" rim, how does that factor into your decisions? I know Steve has 18s, and Andy has both 17s (FM5s on Berger SS) and 18s (Z06s on red SS) that you guys could give your input on this. Thanks for any help from anyone, especially Steve and Andy. And thanks for any explanatinos as well. Later guys.

as far as appearance, i think 18's have a slight advantage. however, what you gain in appearance, you compromise in traction. if they are your only set of wheels and you run alot on the street or track, your 60' (track) will not be as good as it could be. how much will it slow it down?? thats hard to say and since i dont own 18's, i really dont know. i would say, if your strictly a show car and race very little, you cant go wrong with 18's. if youre into racing or, if you dont have seperate wheels for the track, 17's will probably be a better choice.

My 18s are not even in the same boat as the 17s. I had 17s on my car but Road Racing showed that the 18s were quicker by seconds. I now run 18s on the street as well, and with 420 to the wheels on tap with 410s and 295s out back, traction is a lot better than the 17s. I can go from a 50 punch and just barely spin.

Why would you need traction on the street anyway? street racing is bad <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

I would go with 18's just for the plain simple fact that you cant get 345 size tires in a 17 <img border="0" alt="[devil]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_devil.gif" />

I have 18 inch Boyd Coddington Smoothie 2 s. I went with 18x11 on the rear to help with traction issues. I figure more people see my car on the road then at the track. If I get serious about timeslips some day, I will get a set of 16s with slicks for the track. I get SO many great remarks about my wheels, Im glad I went 18s.

I have to vote for the 18's. I've had 17's on my car before and after going with the 18" HRE's, I wouldnt go back to a 17" wheel. The ride quality is a little harsher with less sidewall, but its worth the compromise. Check my sig for a pic.
