General LSX Automobile Discussion - Please talk me out of trading the camaro for a 99 FRC

at the dealer I just started working at we just got a Pewter FRC in on trade. it is in MINT condition and only has 48k miles on it and it has full exhaust and intake setup. I can get it for a very nice price ( around $15k)
I have a Pewter 2002 Z28. I only owe like $4k on it. it has a 3000 stall with a stage 2 performabuilt transmission in it. it has 104k miles on it. I like the car still, but its a little tired and I have always liked vettes more, especially pewter C5 FRC's. idk why but I love pewter.
what would you do?
I want to buy the vette, but it would be more responsible to keep the camaro
here's what the camaro looks like. its nothing special, but it was the first car I bought all on my own.

I am 21 and single. I just figured out payments...... even if I get $5k for my car, the payments will stay about the same as I am paying now. I would just have to pay for another couple years longer than I would paying for the camaro. it all depends on how much the insurance would go up.

Ok, since you want me to talk you out of trading the Camaro I'm gonna say... don't trade it...
Now how I really feel... lol
That vette is freakin clean!! Trade it!!! You will be very happy!!!

yea it doesnt help that I have to stare at it for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. they parked it right in the service drive at my work. those pictures dont do the paint justice. its a beautiful car.

You'll miss the Z28 but you'd also never regret buying a Corvette. That looks like a nice FRC, my buddy has a black one. Plenty of time for being responsible when you're old you know.

Get the vette. It looks awesome. Your payments arent even gonna go up, so you dont have a reason not to get it. There is no way i would pass that up.

theres an upside to it if you get the vette you will for sure no longer be single haha

^ haha. true. I am not saying I am good with the ladies (cuz im not), but I like being single. I am gonna call my insurance agent in the morning and see what the difference would be. if its less than $30 a month difference, I will probably get it.
anyone know from experience of what the difference in insurance would be going from a camaro to a corvette? all I want is a rough estimate or idea

I have both.. im young like you..insurance isnt that much of a difference like you think it would be or should be. Ive even heard ppl say they actually pay cheaper for their corvette (c5 non zo6) than their camaro. GO FOR IT! I personally love my Corvette way more than my Camaro. Most ppl say you will miss it but let me tell you my Camaro just sits and collects dust with occasional driving lol

I've never cared much for the look of any C5 (can't stand the rear), but the FRC/Z06 style looks the worst, IMO.
If it were me, I'd keep your Camaro until you can swing a C6. C6 is the only modern coupe that looks better than an F-body, IMO.
GM really nailed it with the C6. Might be the best looking sports car ever.

Get the vette. It looks clean and you will enjoy it more. I will say however to do your homework.
1. Check the rocker panels for any cracks or marks.
2. Check below the front bumper the radiator supports.....make sure they arent cracked as well.
3. Check the clutch fluid reservoir to make sure its clean
4. Check the DIC.
Turn the key to the ON position, but don't start the engine. Clear any present messages by pressing the RESET button. Hold the OPTIONS button down, and press the FUEL button 4 times. This will get you into the CODES section of the DIC. The computer will automatically display all the codes your car has created. It will cycle through each code every 3 seconds. Any code that ends in H is a history code (something that has occured in the past) but is fine now. Once the computer has finished going through all of it's codes, press RESET to enter Manual Configuration mode. It should start with a module and show "NO CODES" or "# CODES".
To optionally reset the codes once in manual mode, press and hold RESET until it displays "NO CODES". Press OPTIONS to go to the next module. Repeat the steps in this paragraph until you have reset the codes in all the computer modules. NOTE !! Only reset the codes IF you want to - it is NOT necessary to do this.

If you have to pick out of those two cars then i would definitaly get the vette.
But if you can wait then just save up for a C6 as it was mentioned.

I'm biased because i like c5's way more than c6's. So i'm gonna go with...
BUY IT NOWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! haha i know if i had the oppurtunity for a vette especially one that nice, i'd do it in a second.

Get the C5 over the C6 in my opinion. The C6 feels more like a caddy than a vette....however you will have a better block to work with. but....the C5 isnt a slouch either. I would say get the C5, throw longtubes, forge the internals and throw a supercharger on it and call it a day. Wouldnt hurt to go through the drivetrain too. Hell, Get the C5 and throw a LS7 in the damn thing. Would cost you the same as a C6 in the end, but you will have one sick @$$ car :) All depends on what you want.

If the insurance doesnt change a whole lot, I would get that C5 without a doubt.
Its going to hold its value a lot better than your Z28 down the road whenever you want to get something different or upgrade toa C6. It also has less than half the miles your car has and thats another plus.
Since your young, single, and can afford it (if insurance is ok) than DOOOOOOO IIIIITTTTTT.

:funny:
LOL. I didnt think about that one. Then again thats the last thing on my mind :suspiciou J/J
DIC -----> Its the DIAGNOSTIC CENTER
Yes.....You can check the codes without a scanner.....One of the many joys of owning a vette (I'm partial) :D

LS2 C6s are getting more affordable now, much better looking cars than C5s and a slightly better engine to start with.
I'm planning to skip the LS2 though and move right to an LS3.

thanks for the info triche. when I was in mechanics school I was an apprentice under a 30 year vette mechanic. I learned a ton under him. all the tricks to work on the vettes are still fresh in my head. I think they are way easier to work on than the camaros. as far as C6 vs C5. I like the C5 more as far as looks. I like the pop-up headlights and their price is a lot more appealing to me.
I couldnt get ahold of my insurance agent yet, but I will definitely update u on what I find out. thanks for all your input

Don't forget to factor in the increase on your insurance policy. you being 21, they are going to tax you hard. Id say build the camaro, you don't need a vette to get the panties to drop if you got GAME!

[QUOTE=RPM WS6;12845081]I've never cared much for the look of any C5 (can't stand the rear), but the FRC/Z06 style looks the worst, IMO.
I totally agree.. The rear looks really big with those styles :barf:

Don't forget to factor in the increase on your insurance policy. you being 21, they are going to tax you hard. Id say build the camaro, you don't need a vette to get the panties to drop if you got GAME!

Ummmmm.........I am going to risk it all and say, keep your car and be happy for now. You stated that you just started working your current job, so I will assume that you are on a budget. Its just me, but I think that for now, you should stop looking at the vette. It will be sold soon enough and your hunger for THAT car will will also gone. Your car looks to be in very nice condition based upon the picture's and the car will soon enough be all yours. I am just saying that with todays economy, sit back and take some deep, deep breaths and stay within your means. Also, if something happened and you suddenly found yourself without a job, you might be in too deep with payments, insurance, school and everything else needed on a daily basis. Sorry, if I sound too conservative.
I'm gonna have to say... trade it in for that vette. I know I would with mine.

I was looking at a Vette..but I decided against it for now..I'll just keep what I have, pay my Truck off when I get back from the desert, and enjoy no debt for a while..
The C6's are starting to grow on me aswell..give it a few years and they will be down to the price of a C5 Z06.
I think they are way easier to work on than the camaros.
Ya ok..that's a negative..lol

thanks for the info triche. when I was in mechanics school I was an apprentice under a 30 year vette mechanic.
No problem. Just let me know if you need any help or if you have questions. As far as insurance go....if your on your own policy or not makes a big difference. If you are on your own, maybe get a beater to get a multiple car discount:D

Well, the first thing I noticed is you didn't mention if you've driven it or not...I would definitely give it a go and see if you like it that much more than your Camaro to justify making payments for longer.
Besides that, I recently was looking through some possible C5s and found that my insurance did go up from my T/A. It surprised me a bit because most people you read about on here had it decrease, so it will be interesting to see what your agent has to say.
If you like the way it drives better and your insurance won't kill you, I definitely say go for it! You only live once. For me though, I'm just gonna wait out the A6 C6s...time is on my side :D.

Obviously not to you, otherwise you wouldn't have bought it. Looks are subjective so you'll never find a car that everyone can agree on as looking the best. I've posted many times that the C5 and C6 Z06s are likely the best all-around performing cars ever built for the money, stock for stock vs any other car. They are awesome performers; and that's not opinion - it's a fact. But there is no fact or fiction when it comes to appearance.
The OP asked for our opinions, and to try and talk him out of buying the car. I'm just doing my part. :) If it were me, and I was looking to make the move to a Vette, I'd just stick with the F-body until I could afford a C6 based soley on the appearance factor.

I am starting to lean towards keeping the camaro. I love the look of the vette, but i am really looking forward to having a car completely paid off. once its paid off, I can dump that money into seriously building it up to make it my own.
I have not driven it because its been snowing lately and im not gonna get a proper test drive out of it in the snow. not to mention I would have a hell of a time trying to drive it with summer tires on it. I am assuming it drives great tho. I obviously would not buy it if it drove like shit. there are no codes and no leaks. tires are newer and are not burned up like most vettes.
I called my insurance agent and it would only be $16 more per month. it would only cost me about $50 more per month to buy the vette. its not much, but its enough to make me want to keep the camaro. the last 2 years of unstable employment has made me really touchy about money.
Another thing I thought about was how much corvette parts cost. stupid things like EBCM's and HVAC modules cost a lot of money when they go out. I remember quoting parts for corvettes I was working on at the dealer and it always ended up costing like $800 for stupid electrical stuff.
I did just start this job and I have been through 2 years of unstable employment. it was tough, but the method I use to figure out if I can afford things is what kept me afloat. I make sure I can pay the insurance and car payment in one week's worth of pay. then the rest is extra for me to save/spend.
right now I am thinking about just getting a nice set of wheels for the camaro along with lowering it and buying a heads/cam package. The vette had the Borla Stinger exhaust system on it. that is still my favorite exhaust setup. I would like to put it on the camaro now.
thanks again for all your input.

Thats true about the ground clearance but thats something i can look past. Not a big deal at all to me.
Your insurance is $90 a month?? Wow may i ask who is your insurance provider? Im still shopping for insurance because State Farm is a little expensive which is to be expected. I also have a perfect driving record! I would ask your age also but thats getting to technical lol

Age makes all the difference. State Farm is cheap when you're in the 25+ group.
I pay $55/month for full coverage through State Farm on an '02 V8 F-body. I'd probably pay just a bit more on a C5 since it's worth more. I am 30.

right now I pay $100 per month for the camaro. full coverage. the vette would be $116 and im 21, almost 22
today I remembered a couple of things that are wrong with the camaro. the fuel pressure regulator is bad (I think). it has an extended crank issue when the car has been running for a while then shut off and started again. then it needs new O2 sensors. i was gonna wait till I put headers in to replace those.
idk I love both cars.
I drove the Vette on saturday. the roads were clear and it was sunny out, so I took it down the highway for a nice cruise. I behaved. it drove perfectly. nice and smooth cruising. the clutch grabs great, and it shifts smoother than most C5 and C6 vettes I have driven (which is around 100 of them)

There is a dealer by me that currently has a '99 FRC in Torch Red. 36k mile car. It was parked next to a black C6 when I saw it this weekend. My friend had to point it out to me. I didn't even notice it sitting there since a C5 just disappears in my eyes next to a C6. :) The '97-'99 wagon wheels don't help the car any, worst wheel ever for a C5 IMO.

My cousin got a FRC, its a whole different feel from the Fbody. If i were you with your Z, i'll trade for that in a heart beat. especially with payment being around the same.
I want to find a blown engine/high mileage FRC vette myself.
$116 a month? what is this a 7 year loan or something? Or is it really that cheap?

if you already didnt have the camaro, i would say pick up that vette asap. but in reality, the vette doesnt offer that much more than the z28. its still the same engine.
the only thing you upgrading to IMO is lower miles and an m6 at the cost of another year or 2 of payments. IMO, either wait for a c6 or c5z06...the upgrade to a 99 FRC wouldnt cut it from me

I have always had both for more than 3 years but I'm going to be without a F-Body until summer. I really love my vette to death and I think you will be slightly happier with the Vette. Make sure to shop around though. There are many FRCs and other C5s out there at killer prices. That C5 you want looks nice but Pewter is the best color;) Mine is below! Good Luck

Even though I've owned two Pewter F-bodies, and still have one, I'm not a huge fan of the color. Only reason I like it is for DD purposes, it never shows much dirt unless it gets REALLY dirty. I doubt I'd buy another in this color though.

well I made up my mind and said no to the vette. I got to drive my car for the first time in 3 months. as I was driving it to the dealer to see what they would give me for it, I forgot how much fun it was to drive. built auto with a stall FTW. the vette doesnt squat nearly as hard as the camaro does.
I love the raw muscle car feel of the camaro over the vette. I would miss the T-tops too.
Just wait until your financial situation is stable then pick up a vette for shits and giggles.
